Description
Born in Nagasaki, Japan, during the Bunka period, Shōji Saiga befriended a Holland doctor named Jacob Inn, who revealed himself as Bai Yin. Shōji visited Bai Yin daily to learn about the world. When Bai Yin despaired over his future, Shōji encouraged him to discard his past pain and bestowed the new name "Shirogane," cementing their bond. Bai Yin departed Japan after Shōji's brother, Shoichi, was imprisoned for illegal dealings with foreign traders.
Twenty-five years later, Shōji was a renowned swordsman and Nagasaki's foremost physician. Saving a veranda boss led him to encounter Tono Oiran, a courtesan revealed as Angelina Bernouille, a foreign healer carrying the "Soft Stone"—the source of the life-extending elixir Aqua Vitae. During a fire at the veranda, Shōji and Angelina collaborated to rescue patrons using the puppet Harlequin, exposing her identity. Pursued by authorities for her foreign origins, Angelina escaped with local help. Shōji found her in a cave, where she confessed her love and recounted her exile from her family's manor in Quiberon, France, by her mother Lucille. Angelina possessed a bottle of Aqua Vitae, gifted by Lucille with instructions to give it to her beloved. Shōji pledged to stay with Angelina eternally and consumed the elixir.
The couple adopted a marionette named Dean Maistre, later known as Sadayoshi Saiga. They encountered an abandoned Automaton modeled after Francine—created centuries earlier by Bai Yin's brother, Bai Jin—which Shōji weakened in a confrontation. When Angelina gave birth to their biological daughter, Éléonore, Automata attacked, sensing the Soft Stone within the infant. Angelina entrusted Éléonore to the Francine Automaton, which perished protecting the child. Éléonore was raised by Lucille in France, while Shōji and Angelina supported the Shirogane faction—humanity's defenders against Automata.
Years later, Shōji discovered Sadayoshi was Bai Jin's reincarnation. Sadayoshi plotted to transfer his consciousness into his own son, Masaru Saiga, to achieve immortality. To thwart this, Shōji destroyed Sadayoshi's memory data and dispatched Éléonore (now using the alias "Shirogane") to protect Masaru and retrieve the Soft Stone, unknowingly passed to Éléonore during infancy.
After death, Shōji reunited with Angelina in an afterlife sequence, echoing their centuries-long commitment.
