Description
Christina Mackenzie was born in UC 0058 on Side 6's Ribo colony. Her upbringing hinted at her parents' initial desire for a son, fostering a tomboyish childhood where she learned to stand up to boys, developing assertiveness and resilience beneath a mild-mannered, "girl next door" exterior. She played baseball as a child, keeping her bat as an adult memento. She became a cool big sister figure to her young neighbor Alfred Izuruha, frequently babysitting him.
Graduating high school, she enrolled in the Federation Space Force Academy in September UC 0076, excelling to graduate first in her class in 0078. Though aspiring to be a fighter pilot in the War Technology Research Group, the outbreak of the One Year War changed her path. Her piloting skills and technical aptitude led to an assignment as a computer engineer and test pilot under the Space Force Integrated Technology Research Headquarters. She specialized as a "shoe-fitter," calibrating the RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex's learning computer to match its intended pilot. This role took her from analyzing systems at Jaburo to evaluating potential pilots for the G-4 unit at Montana Base.
At Montana Base, impulsive pilot Chuck Keith's undisciplined testing of the G-IV caused an accident, crashing through a hangar roof. Christina and colleague Yuki Nishioka retrieved the unit, discovering Chuck had activated its combat mode. Christina intervened directly, jumping into the line of fire to prevent casualties and disarm the unit. The G-IV was later assigned to Margaret, with whom Christina formed a friendship. When Margaret vanished during a test, Christina defied orders, piloting a refurbished MS-06 Zaku II to search, aided by Yuki in a jeep. Confronting Zeon forces, she battled three Zakus and discovered Margaret was a Zeon spy. Margaret struck Christina's Zaku cockpit, knocking her unconscious; Yuki intervened by sniping Margaret. Despite injuries, Christina volunteered to be the G-IV test pilot, gaining approval after endorsement from the Argon unit.
Reassigned to Side 6's Ribo colony with the Alex, she continued simulations but noted the suit's oversensitivity, designed for Newtype Amuro Ray. She reunited with Alfred Izuruha, assisting him during a rainstorm and rekindling their friendship. One night, mistaking Bernard Wiseman for a burglar near Al's house, she knocked him unconscious with her baseball bat. Al introduced Bernie as his "stepbrother." A mutual attraction developed between Christina and Bernie, with her parents approving. She concealed her role as a test pilot, claiming only to handle military data gathering. Unbeknownst to both, Bernie was a Zeon commando targeting the Alex.
During Operation Rubicon on December 19, UC 0079, Zeon's Cyclops Team attacked. When Mikhail Kaminsky's MS-18E Kämpfer destroyed GM units, Christina piloted the Alex into combat. Though losing the Alex's Chobam Armor to a chain mine, she destroyed the Kämpfer with its gatling guns. She faced reprimand for urban combat but argued it prevented greater casualties. Bernie, the sole survivor of his team, later learned Zeon planned to nuke Side 6 if the Alex remained operational. On December 25, he attacked the Alex in a Zaku II Kai to avert bombardment. Christina sortied, believing the colony was under attack. Deliberately leading the battle to a forested area to minimize civilian harm, she engaged Bernie's Zaku. He used Christmas balloons and smoke bombs to close the distance. Their duel caused mutual damage: her beam saber grazed his cockpit, while his heat axe severed the Alex's arm and damaged its cockpit. In the final charge, Christina impaled the Zaku's cockpit with her beam saber, killing Bernie unknowingly. The explosion incapacitated the Alex; Al witnessed the aftermath.
Recovering, she departed Side 6 for Earth. During her farewell to Al, she asked him to say goodbye to Bernie, remaining unaware of his fate. Al withheld the truth. Nearly three months later, she wrote to Al, inquiring about Bernie's well-being, expressing fondness for their first meeting despite the accident. She mentioned uncertainty about her military discharge amid the returning peace and hoped to reunite with Al and Bernie to travel to new places.
