Description
Commander Killing is a high-ranking officer in the Principality of Zeon's military during the final stages of the One Year War. He serves in Kycilia Zabi's Mobile Assault Force but personally champions Gihren Zabi's ideology. Stationed in Italy before Operation Rubicon, Killing deliberately withheld Zeon's post-Odessa retreat order from a collaborating local mayor. His plan involved using the mayor and civilians as bait to lure Federation forces, creating a diversion for his escape to Granada. This decision sparked dissent within his Cyclops Team. When subordinates prepared to defy his orders and defend the civilians, Killing confronted them with a pistol, demanding to know what they had personally lost in the war and expressing his desire to prevent pointless deaths. During withdrawal preparations, he revealed their true objective: smuggling Cold War-era nuclear missiles off Earth.
In December U.C. 0079, Killing initiated Operation Rubicon, targeting the Federation's prototype Gundam Alex within neutral Side 6. After the Cyclops Team's initial raid failed with heavy losses, Killing escalated. He murdered his superior, Major General Rugens, usurped command, and authorized a nuclear strike on Side 6 to destroy the Alex. This decision violated the Antarctic Treaty banning nuclear weapons and ignored Side 6's protected neutral status. He scheduled the nuclear launch for 12:00 AM on Christmas Day, tasking Colonel Von Helsing's fleet with the attack. Federation forces intercepted and captured Von Helsing's fleet, securing the weapons and preventing the colony's destruction.
Following Operation Rubicon and the war's end, Killing's fate differs across sources. The artbook *MS ERA Pictorial* portrays him committing suicide by shooting himself immediately upon learning of Gihren Zabi's death, in front of Gihren's portrait. The *Gundam Perfect File* notes inconsistencies, suggesting he may have been murdered with his death staged to appear a suicide. Video games like *SD Gundam G Generation* often depict Killing personally leading the nuclear attack fleet, allowing players to eliminate him.
Killing consistently sacrificed subordinates and civilians for military objectives, viewing units like the Cyclops Team as expendable assets. His actions during Operation Rubicon, particularly Rugens' murder and the attempted nuclear annihilation of Side 6, underscored his ruthless commitment to Zeon's cause and devotion to Gihren Zabi's extremist ideology.
