Description
Tomoru Shindo, a City 5 college student nearing graduation, wrestles with uncertainty about his future, including potential enlistment in the Earth Defense Force. He endures recurring dreams of a woman imperiled by mechanical monsters and visions of a mecha named Orgun battling pursuers on the moon. These nightmares foreshadow reality when an alien mecha assaults City 5. Amidst the chaos, Tomoru encounters Professor Michi Kanzaki, whose research into extraterrestrial signals led to the creation of an unknown machine. This machine awakens as Orgun, selecting Tomoru as its pilot and merging with him telepathically and physically to combat the invaders. Through this link, Tomoru learns Orgun journeyed 260 million years to reach Earth and is a renegade Evoluder—an advanced species descended from a human space probe launched centuries earlier. The probe's crew evolved into biomechanical hybrids over eons due to relativistic time dilation during deep-space travel.
The merging grants Tomoru access to Orgun's memories, exposing the Evoluders' genocidal campaign across the galaxy and their intent to destroy Earth. It also reveals Tomoru's ancestral link to a crew member of the original Cygnus mission, progenitors of the Evoluders. Initially resistant to his role and distrustful of the Earth Defense Force, Tomoru evolves from viewing himself as a victim to embracing his duty as Earth's protector after witnessing Evoluders threaten civilians. His bond with Orgun deepens, enhancing their synchronization and combat effectiveness against subsequent assaults. Professor Kanzaki supports him, using data from their psychic link to replicate Orgun's technology for Earth's forces.
In the final battle, Evoluder Commander Zoa attempts to annihilate Earth with an anti-matter cannon. Orgun intercepts the beam using his solar-powered "Grand Cross Attack," sacrificing himself. Kumi Jefferson, revealed as a conduit for Evoluder leader Lady Mhiku, employs unexplained abilities to accelerate the sunrise, enabling the counterstrike. Orgun perishes, but Tomoru survives. Freed from Zoa's control, Lady Mhiku rediscovers compassion through humanity and leads the remaining Evoluders away from Earth. Tomoru, having endured Orgun's destruction, walks into the sunset with Professor Kanzaki, reflecting on Orgun's dual purpose: saving Earth and the Evoluders from their path of destruction.
