Description
Shō Utsumi is a high school student and a central figure in the events surrounding the Gridman Alliance. He possesses a deep knowledge of tokusatsu, especially the Ultra Series, which frequently guides his response to the kaiju threats menacing the city. Standing 176 cm tall and weighing 78 kg, he has blue eyes and teal hair that falls longer in the back, and he typically wears glasses with transparent sides. His usual outfit is a blue shirt marked with a slashed "8" insignia, a white overshirt, black pants, and blue and white sneakers. His backpack strap bears the word "Turbo," a reference to the Transformers Shattered Glass character Sideswipe.
Utsumi maintains a laidback and generally optimistic demeanor, readily accepting his friend Yuta Hibiki’s amnesia and proposing they simply act as friends again. At times, he becomes forceful, such as when trying to prevent Yuta from rushing into battle or during disagreements with Rikka Takarada. Initially, he exhibits enthusiasm for the kaiju battles, interpreting them through tokusatsu tropes. This excitement fades once he recognizes the real casualties and collateral damage the fights cause, leading to a crisis of conscience and guilt over his earlier enjoyment.
He serves primarily in a supportive capacity, applying his genre insight to identify kaiju weaknesses, as he did by locating Ghoulghilas’s vulnerable neck. After Samurai Calibur optimizes the computer Junk, Utsumi gains the ability to see kaiju from a distance alongside Rikka. He founded the Gridman Alliance and often functions as a strategist, though he refrains from direct physical combat.
His background involves an ordinary life until his friend Yuta becomes linked to the Hyper Agent Gridman. Utsumi develops a crush on fellow student Akane Shinjō, creating conflict when he withholds information about her keen interest in kaiju, delaying the alliance’s discovery that she creates the monsters. He is later disturbed to learn the entire city and its inhabitants, himself included, are replicas fashioned by Akane within a simulated reality.
In the narrative’s conclusion, Utsumi pleads with Gridman not to pursue Akane, fearing for Yuta’s safety. After the conflict, he asks Gridman to choose him as a host if he ever returns to avoid another painful farewell. In the subsequent story set in the Gridman Universe, Utsumi is shown to have entered a secret relationship with Hass, a member of the Neon Genesis Junior High team. He continues to support Yuta, particularly in his attempts to confess his feelings to Rikka Takarada, acting as a secret-keeper aware of their mutual feelings but choosing not to interfere directly.
