Movie
Description
Akane Shinjo is a high school student and a central figure in her world, initially presenting herself as a cheerful, friendly, and popular classmate who is well-liked by nearly everyone around her. Standing at 149 centimeters tall with light purple short hair and droopy red eyes, she is considered exceptionally beautiful. However, this public persona is a carefully constructed mask that conceals a deeply troubled and isolated individual. Behind closed doors, she lives as a reclusive hikikomori in a dim, cluttered room filled with trash and cabinets displaying her collection of monster figures, often wearing slightly broken glasses. Her true personality is capricious, self-centered, and prone to intense vengefulness, holding grudges for even the slightest perceived slights, whether intentional or accidental. When frustrated, particularly after one of her monsters is defeated, she exhibits violent outbursts, such as kicking and shattering her computer monitor.
Her primary motivation stems from a desire to escape from the real world and its problems. To this end, she acts as the de facto god and creator of the city of Tsutsujidai, the story's primary setting. Working in collaboration with the enigmatic entity Alexis Kerib, she crafts intricate sculptures of kaiju, which he then animates into digital monsters. She deploys these kaiju to exact revenge on anyone who has upset her, doing so without any apparent guilt or remorse for the destruction and loss of life caused. Her role in the narrative is that of the primary antagonist, whose actions drive the conflict as the Gridman Alliance rises to counter the kaiju attacks she initiates. She is also a skilled manipulator, adept at using words and gestures to extract information from others without their awareness.
Her key relationships are complex and often fraught with hidden truths. She is a classmate of the protagonist, Yuta Hibiki, and has been a long-time friend of Rikka Takarada, though their interactions have diminished by the time the story begins. Her relationship with Alexis Kerib is one of mutual exploitation; he provides her with the power to create kaiju, while she provides him with the emotional energy and entertainment he seeks. She also creates a kaiju named Anti for the specific purpose of destroying Gridman, a being she comes to resent for interfering with her monster attacks. In a moment of desperation, she directly attacks Yuta with a utility knife, demonstrating the lengths to which her instability will drive her.
Throughout the story, Akane undergoes significant development. Her initial sense of joy and anticipation at seeing how Gridman will counter her kaiju gradually erodes as she suffers repeated defeats. This leads to a loss of confidence and a shift in her motivations, with her later monster creations reflecting her inner psychological turmoil rather than external grievances. Ultimately, her facade crumbles, and she is confronted with the reality that the people in her created world, despite being her own creations, have developed genuine emotions and wills of their own. This leads to her own salvation as she finally finds the strength to return to the real world and confront her original issues.
Akane possesses notable abilities despite lacking superhuman powers herself. She is an exceptionally skilled sculptor, designing and crafting highly detailed physical models of kaiju. She is proficient with technology, using a tablet computer to operate remote-controlled drones that allow her to survey the city. While she cannot animate the kaiju herself, her ability to design them is the crucial first step in their creation, and she also possesses the power, via a gesture of parting her fingers, to directly control them. After stealing a portion of Alexis Kerib's power, she gains the limited ability to bring her own sculptures to life, though not as effortlessly as he could. It is also revealed that her very existence in Tsutsujidai is as an avatar, a digital representation of a person from the real world, which she can edit like a video game character.
