Kazuichi Banjou originally spearheaded the ghouls of the 11th Ward. He developed deep feelings for Rize Kamishiro during her time there, consistently defending her in meetings and envisioning her as their leader. Rize found him irritating and threatened to kill him if he persisted; before departing, she sarcastically called him "leader," spurring him to unify the ward's ghouls and claim the title.
After Aogiri Tree suppressed the 11th Ward and conscripted him, Banjou received orders to locate Rize. Tracking her scent led him to Anteiku in the 20th Ward, where he detected her presence on Ken Kaneki. Mistaking Kaneki for her lover, Banjou attacked but was knocked unconscious accidentally. Learning Rize's fate altered his hostile stance toward Kaneki. When Ayato Kirishima broke Banjou's arm, he was coerced into aiding Kaneki's capture for Aogiri.
Imprisoned with Kaneki, Banjou proposed a joint escape and formed an Anti-Aogiri group. Their attempt failed against Yamori, resulting in imprisonment until Kaneki freed them during the 11th Ward battle. Grateful, Banjou pledged loyalty to Kaneki and joined his faction. He participated in critical missions, including the raid on Kanou's lab where he battled Gagi and Guge and suffered wounds from Eto Yoshimura. He later demonstrated unusual regenerative abilities, recovering swiftly from injuries inflicted by a berserk Kaneki.
Initially a clumsy fighter hindered by pacifism despite his speed-oriented Ukaku kagune, Banjou endured mockery from his fiercely loyal followers, Ichimi, Jiro, and Sante. Training under Kaneki spurred significant development. Following a timeskip, he emerged as the charismatic, intelligent leader of the 6th Ward ghouls, capable of reading complex literature. His kagune evolved, specializing in potent healing rather than combat, a skill showcased when he healed Ayato Kirishima's severe injuries during the Cochlea raid.
He agreed to assist Ayato in rescuing Hinami Fueguchi from Cochlea, stressing his action was solely for "Hina-chan." During the raid, he prioritized Hinami's protection and healed Ayato. Post-raid, he continued support roles, attempting to heal Akira Mado and managing logistics for the United Front alongside Shuu Tsukiyama.
Banjou maintained key bonds. His loyal followers accompanied him from the 11th Ward. Hinami saw him as an older brother, and he watched horror movies with her despite his own fear. His relationship with Kaneki deepened into mutual respect, with Banjou offering to be Kaneki's "shield." His enduring, unrequited affection for Rize shaped his early actions before shifting toward dedication to Kaneki's cause.
Physically, Banjou possesses an imposing stature—towering and stout with short, flushed hair. His beard originally featured a distinctive reverse "の" shape, later changing to a cross design. His name and appearance draw thematic inspiration from the Banjo-Kazooie video game character, reflecting his Ukaku kagune's wing-like nature.
