TV-Series
Description
Gaito Kurōzu is a sixth-grade student at Aibo Academy Elementary Division and serves as one of the central figures in the narrative. He is the partner and buddy of Abygale, the Black Death Dragon from Darkness Dragon World. His journey with Abygale began before the events of the series when he discovered the dragon critically injured in Darkness Dragon World following a devastating battle with the evil entity Azi Dahaka. Bonding over their shared and intense desire to become the strongest fighter, the two formed a formidable buddy partnership.
In terms of personality, Gaito presents a rough, cold, and antisocial exterior. He frequently treats others with indifference or harshness and actively tries to push away those who approach him with good intentions, such as Gao Mikado. He takes the game of Buddyfight with extreme seriousness and has zero tolerance for anyone who uses dirty tactics or mistreats cards. This obsessive drive to win is so strong that he considers victory his destiny, a belief that was reinforced by an undefeated streak after he partnered with Abygale. His first loss, suffered at the hands of Gao Mikado during the World Buddyfight Cup, leads to a severe and very public emotional breakdown, followed by intense self-punishment. Despite his intimidating demeanor, he has a hidden protective side, especially toward children. He acts as a renegade, battling older students who are card-hunters to retrieve stolen cards and return them to their younger, rightful owners. He also suffers from ailurophobia, an intense fear of cats, and struggles significantly with social situations, often hiding from crowds or feeling deeply embarrassed when having to ask for help or show gratitude.
Initially, Gaito’s primary motivation is singular and unwavering: to prove himself as the strongest Buddyfighter in the world and validate his and Abygale’s power. This ambition leads him to pursue the legendary Dragon Force, an ultimate power rumored to be on a remote island during the WBC Japan Qualifiers. He qualifies for the tournament by achieving his one-hundredth victory, at which point the Dragon Force temporarily responds to him. However, his closed heart and obsession with winning through force cause the power to abandon him. This failure is compounded by frustration when his rivals, Gao Mikado and Tasuku Ryuenji, successfully wield the Dragon Force. A pivotal moment arrives after another loss, when he comes to the realization that sadness is born from a weak heart, allowing the Dragon Force to finally resonate with him genuinely. This marks a significant turning point, leading him to sincerely apologize to Abygale for his past harshness and adopt a more grateful and collaborative outlook.
His role in the story evolves from a solitary, mysterious rival to a crucial ally in the face of larger threats. Key relationships define his arc. His bond with Abygale transforms from a purely instrumental partnership based on mutual ambition to one of deep loyalty and mutual respect. His rivalry with Gao Mikado shifts from cold confrontation to grudging admiration and eventual alliance. He also has a significant dynamic with Tasuku Ryuenji, which involves competitive clashes that eventually give way to hard-earned strategic cooperation. Facing the threat of Kyoya Gaen and the artificial Dragon Drei power, Gaito and Tasuku fight together in a two-on-one Buddyfight, and though they are defeated, this loss motivates them to set aside their differences. A Buddyfight with Tasuku settles their strategic disagreements, after which they collaborate to refine their abilities and train Gao for the final rematch against Kyoya.
As a fighter, Gaito specializes in a Darkness Dragon World deck that mirrors his grim reaper-like persona. His early tactics focus on dismantling opponent strategies through calculated deck destruction and harnessing the power of cards in the drop zone to fuel devastating assaults, often executed with his signature weapon, the Death Dragon Sickle. His arsenal includes powerful Impact Monsters such as Vanishing Death Hole and its successor, Unlimited Death Drain. After obtaining and mastering the Dragon Force, his abilities evolve further into the Dragon Force Style of Retaliation, enhancing his tactical versatility in battles. This relentless adaptation of his deck and strategy mirrors his internal battle against self-doubt and external pressures, charting a path of resilience as he grapples with his own identity and the weight of his expectations. By the end of his journey, this once reclusive character decides to accompany Gao and his friends to Los Angeles, signaling his final integration into a team and his acceptance of collaborative bonds over solitary strength.
