Description
Honoka Tamarai is a 17-year-old student at Aoba High School, serving as captain of the girls' volleyball team and known for her athletic skill. She has a short, slim build with noticeable physical development, chestnut brown hair in a bob cut secured by a blue flower-shaped hairpin, and blue eyes. Standing 155 cm tall, she typically appears in her school uniform or volleyball attire.

Born with exceptional athletic talent, Honoka excelled in volleyball, track, and swimming during middle school. Her superiority caused peer jealousy and isolation, leading her to choose Aoba High—a school without a strong sports focus—over scholarship offers from prominent sports academies, seeking a quieter high school life. Academically, she struggles significantly, frequently attends remedial classes, and achieves lower grades than most peers, yet maintains a persistent, positive attitude toward improvement.

Her personality blends outward cheerfulness, kindness, and protectiveness with inner thoughtfulness. She is deeply loyal, particularly to her best friend Rena Kariu, and openly expressive with her emotions. Despite her athletic precision, Honoka is extremely clumsy and possesses no sense of direction, relying on childhood friends for daily navigation. This contrasts sharply with her protective nature; since elementary school, she fought boys to defend her friend Akira Inukai, displaying a stubborn strength that continues into adolescence.

Her defining relationship is with Rena Kariu. They met when Rena accused Honoka of holding back during volleyball matches and challenged her to play seriously. During practice, Honoka's powerful spike struck Rena, sparking initial conflict that forged a close bond. Their friendship strained when an exhausted Honoka, fatigued from remedial exams, fainted during practice and accidentally caused Rena's injury. This led Rena to consider quitting volleyball, but through classmate interventions and honest reconciliation, they reaffirmed their commitment to both the sport and each other, later planning to attend college together to continue playing.

Honoka shares lifelong friendships with Akira Inukai and Nobunaga Asaji, who often protect and guide her due to her poor navigation. She harbors unrequited romantic feelings for Nobunaga but conceals them to preserve their group dynamic, especially since Nobunaga likes someone else. She confided this secret only to Chizuru Hishiro. A pivotal childhood moment occurred when she protected a tearful Akira, prompting him to adopt a "tough" persona to shield her—a decision cementing their lifelong bond.

Athletically, Honoka initially downplayed her volleyball skills to avoid attention, but Rena's influence inspired her to fully embrace her talent. As team captain, she prioritized teamwork and enjoyment over pure competition, famously describing their final tournament loss as "fun." Her future aspirations centered on continuing volleyball with Rena beyond high school.

Trivia includes her nickname "Tama," her preference for drinking milk with fried rice, the origin of her surname as an homage to Tamarai Station in Ōita, Japan, and her character design using light blue as an image color reflecting her calm demeanor.
