TV-Series
Description
Kōichi Hirose is a student at Budogaoka High School in the town of Morioh, where he becomes an unexpected but crucial participant in the escalating supernatural conflicts centered around the area. Initially introduced as a timid and physically unimposing teenager, Kōichi is often underestimated due to his short stature and gentle demeanor. He lives with his mother and older sister, and his ordinary life changes forever when he encounters Jōtarō Kūjō, who reveals the existence of Stands. Despite his initial fear and lack of confidence, Kōichi proves to have a resilient spirit and a strong sense of justice, which drives him to confront dangers that would make most people flee.

Kōichi’s personality is defined by his politeness, empathy, and an underlying courage that grows as he faces increasingly severe threats. He is generally cautious and thinks before acting, but when his friends or innocent people are in danger, he shows a fierce determination that belies his small frame. His sense of morality is clear but not rigid, and he often reacts with shock or horror to the actions of antagonists like Yoshikage Kira, yet he rarely backs down from a fight. Over the course of the story, Kōichi transitions from a passive individual who needs protection to an active hero who can stand alongside seasoned Stand users.

His primary motivation shifts from simple self-preservation to a strong desire to protect Morioh and the people he cares about. After being dragged into the search for the Bow and Arrow and the subsequent hunt for a serial killer, Kōichi embraces his responsibility as a Stand user. He feels a deep loyalty to Jōtarō and Rohan Kishibe, as well as a protective instinct toward his classmate and friend Tamami Kobayashi and the young girl Hayato Kawajiri. He also becomes a close confidant to Jōsuke Higashikata, often acting as a grounding presence for Jōsuke’s more reckless or emotional impulses.

In the story, Kōichi serves as a viewpoint character for much of Diamond Is Unbreakable, allowing the audience to experience the bizarre events through the eyes of a relatively normal high schooler. His interactions with Jōtarō provide a mentor-student dynamic, while his rivalry-turned-friendship with Rohan adds tension and humor. His role becomes especially significant when he is sent by Jōtarō to investigate Yoshikage Kira’s identity, leading to one of the most tense and memorable confrontations in the arc. He also forms a subtle and tender bond with Yukako Yamagishi, who initially kidnaps him due to obsessive love, but through his forgiveness and patience, he helps her grow into a more balanced person, and they begin a genuine relationship.

Kōichi undergoes substantial development from a boy who freezes in panic to a composed fighter who can analyze enemy abilities mid-battle. His early helplessness in encounters like the fight with Angelo gives way to strategic bravery during the battle against Sheer Heart Attack, where he risks his life to allow Jōtarō to land a decisive blow. Even when severely injured, he continues to push forward, exemplifying the unwavering spirit typical of JoJo protagonists, though he remains more emotionally expressive and less stoic than Jōtarō.

His notable ability is his Stand, Echoes, which initially manifests as a small, shell-like creature and evolves through three distinct Acts. Act 1 allows Kōichi to attach a sound effect, such as “whoosh” or “boing,” onto an object or person, causing that effect to manifest in reality, which he uses for distraction or minor physical influence. Act 2 greatly expands this power, letting him write any onomatopoeic word onto a surface; the word’s effect becomes real, such as “hot” creating flame or “slice” cutting an object. Act 3, which emerges during the fight with Sheer Heart Attack, is a humanoid Stand with a distinct personality and the ability to increase the gravitational force on a specific target, pinning them to the ground. This power, called Three Freeze, is incredibly useful for immobilizing enemies and is Kōichi’s primary offensive ability for the remainder of the series. Echoes’ evolution reflects Kōichi’s own growth from a quiet boy to a confident young man with a command over sound and weight, making him one of the most resourceful Stand users in Morioh.
