Description
Ainz Ooal Gown, formerly known as Momonga, is a skeletal undead entity who rules the Great Tomb of Nazarick as the Sorcerer King of the Sorcerer Kingdom. He began as a human salaryman named Suzuki Satoru, living in a dystopian future where he devoted his free time to the DMMORPG YGGDRASIL, leading the powerful guild Ainz Ooal Gown. When the game shut down, he remained logged in as his character and was transported to a new world, permanently trapped in the form of his undead avatar alongside his guild’s headquarters.
His appearance is that of a fleshless skeleton, often dressed in ornate black and gold sorcerer robes or, when posing as the adamantite-ranked adventurer Momon, in full black armor with a red cape. A crimson orb floats within his ribcage, and a faint red glow emanates from his eye sockets. As Sorcerer King, he wears elegant white and gold garments for formal occasions.
He is intensely cautious and strategic, dedicated to safeguarding Nazarick’s supremacy through meticulous planning. His undead nature suppresses human emotions, resulting in a cold, calculating, and often merciless disposition. He possesses a collector’s mindset, amassing items, knowledge, and living beings for study and utility. He feels profound loyalty toward the NPCs of Nazarick, seeing them as the children of his former guildmates, and acts as a protective, if occasionally uncertain, paternal figure.
Despite this devotion, he displays extreme ruthlessness toward outsiders, placing little value on human life and employing mass slaughter and torture to achieve his aims. He adheres to a code of repaying good with good and evil with evil. He carefully maintains a facade of omniscience for his followers, though internally he often feels uncertain and relies on subordinates like Demiurge and Albedo to interpret and validate his unintended successes.
He established the Sorcerer Kingdom following a decisive victory at the Katze Plains, where he annihilated much of the Re-Estize Kingdom’s army with a single spell, leading to its eventual collapse. He expanded his influence through schemes such as orchestrating the demonic disturbance in the Holy Kingdom, manipulating events under the identity of the demon emperor Jaldabaoth to later emerge as its savior.
The Floor Guardians of Nazarick crafted varying mythological narratives to deify him, spreading legends that portrayed him as both a benevolent creator and a demon-slaying savior, reflecting their diverse perceptions of his nature.
Under the alias Momon, he is regarded as a heroic and honorable adventurer, earning trust and forming ties with groups like the Swords of Darkness. This identity is a strategic disguise, and he maintains emotional detachment from humans, seldom affected by their suffering or death.
His actions are driven by a desire to locate other players who may have entered this world, to protect Nazarick, and to ensure the welfare of its inhabitants. All his endeavors ultimately serve to eternalize the legend of Ainz Ooal Gown, the guild he represents.
