Description
Lumen and Joule form dual expressions of a single entity across the Azure Striker Gunvolt series. Joule, a 13-year-old artificial Adept crafted by the Sumeragi Group via Septimosome implantation, wields the Muse Septima. This electronic singing ability empowers other Adepts and projects Lumen as a distinct persona – Joule's idealized 17-year-old self, manifesting as a blonde, winged spirit radiating confidence and freedom. Sumeragi weaponized Lumen as a virtual idol to detect and manipulate Adepts, masking Joule's imprisonment.
Following her rescue by Gunvolt, Joule lives with him for six months. She attends school under a false identity while Lumen actively supports Gunvolt's missions, amplifying his powers through song. Joule's personality evolves from shyness towards cheerfulness, yet remains distinct from Lumen's assertive nature. An incident involving Sumeragi's September Record MMORPG unexpectedly reveals Joule's capacity to hack systems using her Septima.
Sumeragi later recaptures Joule, forcing her back into the Muse role at their Firmament orbital station. Executive Nova suppresses Lumen's consciousness to exert control. After Gunvolt defeats Nova, Asimov fatally shoots Joule's body. To save Gunvolt, Joule merges her soul with Lumen, abandoning her physical form to exist as a spiritual entity within him. This fusion imbues Joule's personality with Lumen's bolder demeanor.
Subsequent sabotage by the anti-human Adept group Eden fractures Joule's power into nine shards, reducing her manifestation to a child-like form. Despite this diminished state, she continues supporting Gunvolt emotionally and through song, though burdened by guilt over his suffering. After confronting Eden, Joule's soul fuses with Mytyl Kamizono, the Muse Septima's original owner, resulting in mutual amnesia. The merged individual lives freely under Mytyl's identity, severing all ties to Joule and Lumen's past.
A separate iteration of Lumen emerges decades later, born solely from Gunvolt's memories as an "Image Pulse" during a new conflict. This version provides song-based support to Kirin and Gunvolt but possesses no connection to the original Joule or Lumen, playing a minor narrative role.
