Description
Megumi Katō is a high school student at Toyogasaki Academy and the titular heroine of her story. She is a second-year student, later advancing to third-year, and shares a classroom with the protagonist, Tomoya Aki. Her physical appearance includes a height of 160 cm, and her birthday is September 23rd. Despite being objectively cute or beautiful, her most defining external characteristic is her lack of distinctiveness, which makes her surprisingly easy to overlook. This ordinariness is so pronounced that Tomoya, who is intensely focused on finding the perfect heroine, initially fails to recognize her as his own classmate.
Her personality is as unassuming as her appearance. She is consistently described as a very ordinary, kind, and soft-spoken girl who lacks a standout character trait. She knows very little about otaku culture, the world of dating simulators, and the various hobbies that drive her friends, yet she never dismisses or distances herself from their passions. Her attitude toward Tomoya is often flat and straightforward, and she is known for delivering pointed, deadpan retorts that catch him off guard. Because her reactions are usually subdued and her presence faint, other characters frequently forget she is in the same room, a quality jokingly attributed to her having a "stealthy" nature.
Beneath this calm and passive exterior, Megumi has a strong and principled understanding of friendship and loyalty. She feels genuinely slighted when these bonds are violated and has a caring disposition that compels her to help others. Her primary motivation in the story is initially passive, as she is recruited by Tomoya to be the real-life model and inspiration for the main heroine in the doujin (self-published) visual novel his circle, Blessing Software, is creating. While she goes along with his schemes without much fuss, she gradually becomes more invested in the project and the group's success, serving as a grounding presence among the more flamboyant and opinionated personalities.
Within the Blessing Software circle, Megumi is responsible for being the model for the main heroine named Meguri, and she also provides general assistance with tasks such as programming, directing, and running errands. Her role evolves to become the circle's leader and an indispensable member who acts as a lubricant for the group's often-rocky interpersonal dynamics. Her key relationships are central to the narrative. Her bond with Tomoya Aki is the core of the story; he is determined to transform her from a "boring" girl into a captivating heroine, while she in turn provides unwavering support for his seemingly impossible dream. She maintains a complex friendship with her talented but temperamental peers, the illustrator Eriri Spencer Sawamura and the writer Utaha Kasumigaoka. While she gets along with them, her placid presence highlights their dramatic personalities. A significant turning point occurs later in the series when Eriri and Utaha leave the circle, forcing Megumi to step up and take on a leadership role, during which her more assertive and passive-aggressive side comes to the forefront.
Megumi undergoes notable character development, primarily in how her emotions become more visible over time. Initially, her expressions are flat and unreadable, which causes trouble for Eriri, who needs varied expressions to draw from. As the story progresses, she becomes less of a passive observer and more of an active participant, with her feelings—especially those concerning Tomoya and the integrity of their group—becoming clearer and more powerful. Her abilities are not flamboyant but are consistently practical and essential. She has a talent for learning new skills quickly, including programming and scriptwriting, to help the project. Her most notable ability is her emotional intelligence and her skill as a "human lubricant," as she is exceptionally good at mediating conflicts, keeping the group together, and providing sensible, common-sense solutions to their creative and personal crises.
