Description
Baldroy, nicknamed Bard or Baldo, serves as the chef and a senior staff member at Phantomhive Manor. He is a sturdily built American man with dirty-blond hair and turquoise eyes, typically clad in a chef's uniform under a long white apron, often seen with goggles around his neck and a cigarette in his mouth.

Before joining the Phantomhive household, Baldroy farmed in America during the gold rush. He married rancher Joanna, and they had a son, Baldroy Jr. His peaceful life ended when an attack destroyed his village, killing his wife and child. This tragedy drove him into military service, where he fought in numerous conflicts, including the Apache Wars in Arizona, which he indirectly references as a "terrible time with snakes." He gained a reputation as an "invincible private soldier" for surviving brutal battles where his entire unit perished, experiences that ingrained deep survivor's guilt and a fear of death.

Sebastian Michaelis discovered Baldroy starving and near death in a cave after a battle. Sebastian offered him employment as a chef and bodyguard for Ciel Phantomhive, emphasizing the role required expertise in "killing people" over culinary skills. Baldroy accepted, later awakening at Phantomhive Manor. Despite his official role as chef, his cooking is disastrous; he employs military equipment like flamethrowers and blowtorches, resulting in charred or inedible food. Ciel explicitly forbade these battlefield cooking methods in the kitchen, though Baldroy pursues cooking as a means to practice patience, contrasting his violent past.

As a senior servant, Baldroy assumes leadership of the household staff when Ciel or Sebastian are absent. He coordinates the other servants during crises, such as attacks on the manor or investigations, displaying tactical acumen and calmness under pressure. He frequently views challenges through military analogies, referring to pests as "the enemy" or the manor as a "battlefield." His relationships with fellow servants are familial: he acts as a protective older brother to Mey-Rin and Finnian, guiding them during emotional distress. While respectful of Sebastian, he occasionally challenges his formality. His dynamic with Snake remains distant due to contrasting personalities and Snake's affinity for reptiles, which Baldroy dislikes.

In the *Book of the Atlantic* storyline, Baldroy remained at Phantomhive Manor and did not accompany Ciel, Sebastian, and Snake aboard the Campania; his role involved manor upkeep rather than the ship-based events.

Across all media, Baldroy's development emphasizes resilience amid trauma. He channels his wartime skills into protecting the Phantomhive household, balancing his guilt with loyalty to Ciel. His background as a soldier and survivor informs his pragmatic outlook, while he seeks purpose beyond violence through his imperfect culinary efforts.
