Kogoro Mōri runs the Mouri Detective Agency in Beika Town. A former police officer in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One, he worked alongside Inspector Megure. Though an excellent marksman, he wasn't considered particularly skilled at investigations during his police career. He left the force around the time his wife, Eri Kisaki, moved out; they never officially divorced. A contributing incident involved Kogoro grazing Eri's leg with a bullet to save her during a hostage situation. Their separation has lasted over ten years, with their daughter Ran persistently attempting to reconcile them. Kogoro and Eri remain emotionally connected, demonstrating mutual care through gestures like Kogoro purchasing expensive birthday gifts for her, though his occasional forgetfulness or clumsiness complicates these efforts. Kogoro attended Teitan High School and Beika University, where he was the judo team ace despite suffering from stage fright. His personality is marked by laziness and unprofessionalism in routine cases; he often passes office hours drinking beer, smoking heavily, gambling on horse races, or watching his favorite pop idol, Yoko Okino, whose merchandise decorates his office and bedroom. He exhibits a flirtatious demeanor around attractive female clients, embarrassing Ran and cited as a reason Eri has not returned. However, his entire demeanor shifts when cases involve Ran or Eri, revealing a serious, focused, and professionally competent side. In these situations, he demonstrates improved deductive skills and a stronger grasp of interpersonal relationships than his usual surrogate detective, Shinichi Kudo, though his overall investigative abilities remain inconsistent. Most of Kogoro's detective reputation stems from Conan Edogawa, Shinichi Kudo's shrunken alter ego, who lives with the Mouri family. Conan uses a stun-gun wristwatch to tranquilize Kogoro at crime scenes, then employs a voice-changing bowtie to imitate Kogoro's voice and present solutions while Kogoro appears asleep. This method earned Kogoro the nickname "Sleeping Kogoro" and transformed his public image into that of a master detective. Kogoro overlooks the frequent tranquilizations and discrepancies in his deductions, attributing solved cases to his own subconscious brilliance. He occasionally solves cases independently, particularly those with personal connections, like protecting Eri from false murder accusations or uncovering truths when Ran is endangered. Kogoro struggles with mild acrophobia in non-manga adaptations, experiencing discomfort in high-altitude settings. He also has documented health issues, including high uric acid and cholesterol levels. Despite his flaws, he possesses a strong moral compass, openly rejecting any justification for murder and actively intervening to prevent suicides or further violence by culprits. His finances are unstable due to impulsive spending on alcohol, gambling, and idol merchandise, leading him to rely on rental cars despite owning a driver's license. Throughout the series, Kogoro's development is subtle but evident. He retains core traits like laziness and vanity but shows deeper layers of dedication when family is threatened. His relationship with Eri sees minor advancements, such as joint family outings facilitated by Ran, though their reconciliation remains unresolved. In the Bourbon Arc, a case involving Eri highlights his genuine affection and willingness to exert genuine investigative effort, contrasting his typical reliance on Conan.
