Description
Yui Funami is a central character across the franchise, featured in the original manga, anime series, OVAs, ONAs, and spin-offs such as Reset! and Ōmuro-ke, as well as the isekai spin-off Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken.

She maintains a cool-headed, mature, and reliable demeanor, often serving as the voice of reason among her friends. While generally quiet, she easily bursts into laughter at puns from Ayano or jokes from Kyōko and is known for her sharp retorts, especially toward Kyōko. Yui enjoys video games and is a skilled cook, famous for her omelet rice, which captivates Chinatsu. She lives alone in an apartment and occasionally feels lonely when others, particularly Kyōko, are absent, though she does not admit it.

In appearance, Yui is tall for her age with chin-length black or dark purple hair, featuring two longer locks in the back that reach her shoulders, and dark brown eyes. She usually wears her school uniform but dons normal, light clothing outside school and sleeps in panda pajamas gifted by Kyōko. As a child, she had long hair in kindergarten but cut it short during elementary school to appear tough for Kyōko.

Academically, her ability is unspecified, though Kyōko often asks to see her homework, implying strong performance. She is a fast runner and was approached by the track and field club but declined, being already part of the Amusement Club. Though boyish in childhood and unbothered by bugs or spiders then, she is now uneasy around them.

Her relationships define much of her character. Yui and Kyōko Toshinō are best friends and childhood friends, with parents who are also friends. Yui frequently disciplines Kyōko for mischief yet acknowledges they were born into friendship. She feels shy when Kyōko hugs her but remains deeply close, sharing many memories. She shows no hesitation in getting physically close to Kyōko when angry, has slept beside her, and smiled when receiving half-eaten ramen from her.

Along with Kyōko, Yui shares a childhood friendship with Akari Akaza. She is the most respectful toward Akari in the Amusement Club yet occasionally teases her. Yui has caressed Akari’s head while in pajamas, enjoyed her sandwiches on a train trip, and hugged her closely for a photo, sparking jealousy in Chinatsu.

Yui is initially unaware of Chinatsu Yoshikawa’s crush, though over time the affection becomes clear, making Yui somewhat uneasy. She acts protectively toward Chinatsu and reacts with unusual violence toward Kyōko when she bothers Chinatsu, suggesting possible hidden feelings or protective jealousy. Yui comforts Chinatsu when Kyōko teases her, offers to wash her dirty shirt, accepts a date invitation, and hugs her to calm jealousy.

She shares mutual respect with Ayano Sugiura, connecting mainly through Kyōko. They both liked the idea of being sisters—Ayano wanting a little sister and Yui an older one—though they grew embarrassed when asked to act it out.

Yui acts as a big sister to her cousin Mari Funami, who visits often. She cares deeply for Mari, wanting Chinatsu to dress as Mirakurun for her and giving Mari her first errand while watching from a distance for safety.

She interacts little with Chitose Ikeda, though they are classmates and friendly. Yui remarks that Sakurako Ōmuro is lazier than Kyōko, but they remain good friends. She gets along with Himawari Furutani and assists her, along with other second-years, in training on back hip circles. She empathizes with Chizuru Ikeda as another target of Kyōko’s teasing and often nags Kyōko to stop.

Yui first met Nadeshiko Ōmuro at a family restaurant, where Nadeshiko noticed an error in Yui’s homework, pointed it out, and helped her. Yui appreciated the assistance, and unknowingly, they both play the same online game, Namo Namo Fantasy 4, where Yui uses the username “Goyururi.”

In specific storylines like YuruYuri Nachuyachumi!+, the Amusement Club has a sleepover at Yui’s house, playing video games. During the event, the girls try to photograph Kyōko’s sleeping face as revenge for pictures she took of them on a trip.

Her background includes being born into friendship with Kyōko, their parents already friends. As a child, she was boyish, unbothered by bugs, and resembled the current Kyōko in personality. A reliable and independent friend, she manages her life responsibly without neglecting school, keeps a clean and orderly home, and cares for her younger cousin. Though mature, she sometimes feels lonely in her apartment and values visits from friends. Her hobbies include playing video games, mainly role-playing games, and reading manga, which fills an entire shelf in her apartment.
