Balza, the older brother of Meray, descends from the traveler who sealed Hoopa's destructive power into the Prison Bottle a century earlier. He and Meray grew up with Hoopa in Arche Valley, forging a familial bond with the mischievous Mythical Pokémon. Throughout their youth, Balza exhibited a consistently responsible nature, contrasting his sister's playful demeanor. Years later, while exploring Arche Valley, Balza discovered the hidden Prison Bottle inside a cave. Upon contact, he became possessed by the dark energy of Hoopa's Unbound form—a manifestation of rage built over a century of confinement. Compelled by this force, he unsealed the bottle, freeing Hoopa Unbound and igniting its rampage across Dahara City. After Meray resealed Hoopa's power, Balza reverted to his normal state and recounted Hoopa's history to Ash and his companions. Balza held ancestral knowledge essential to recreating the Prison Bottle, understanding it required channeling elemental powers (earth, fire, and water) at Dahara Tower. He guided the group there and oversaw the ritual, utilizing Serena's Braixen, Ash's Frogadier, and a wild Hippopotas to forge the new vessel. When the bottle accidentally touched Ash, transferring Hoopa's shadow possession to him, Balza remained beside Ash and Hoopa during the resulting space-time collapse. He encouraged Hoopa to overcome its inability to traverse its own rings by invoking their great-grandfather's teachings on faith and self-belief. Balza wore a necklace depicting Arceus, symbolizing his family's connection to the deity's power—the same force his ancestor used to create the original Prison Bottle. Following Hoopa's reconciliation with its shadow form and Dahara City's restoration, Balza continued safeguarding Hoopa alongside Meray, upholding their role as chosen guardians.
