Description
Chōun, also known as Zhao Yun, is a Maozoku warrior facing discrimination as "Jyuuza" for his people's exclusion from the zodiac. Initially serving Gongsun Zan, he finds Liu Bi's ideals of benevolence compelling but delays formally joining his forces until a decade after their first encounter. When Sou Sou's army accuses the Maozoku of sheltering Yellow Turban rebels, Chōun fights against this human oppression. This conflict forces the Maozoku into proving their innocence by fighting for Sou Sou, drawing Chōun into the wider Three Kingdoms conflicts. Throughout, he remains unwaveringly loyal to Liu Bi and his cause.
Chōun possesses a serious and virtuous demeanor. He maintains a strictly respectful and professional relationship with the half-Maozoku warrior Kan'u, supporting her without romantic involvement in her personal stories. Strategically, he participates in key battles, including defending against Sou Sou's forces and aiding alliance-building efforts with the country of Go.
His character development emphasizes steadfastness and duty, remaining consistent across media. In later events like the Battle of Chi Bi, he serves as a reliable military figure within Liu Bi's army, contributing tactically without significant personal arcs deviating from his established virtues. Interactions with characters like the hot-tempered Chou Hi and the strategic Sho Katsu Riou reinforce his role as a stabilizing and honorable presence.
His background as a warrior committed to justice and his people's survival underpins all his actions. His narrative focuses on this consistency as a moral and tactical asset to the Maozoku and Liu Bi's faction across their campaigns, avoiding elaborate personal subplots or transformations.
