Description
Kan'u is a half-human, half-Maozoku from the secluded Juuza village, descendants of the 13th zodiac cat people who endure human discrimination. She possesses brown hair typically in a bun, black eyes, and stands 163 cm tall. Orphaned young, she was raised with childhood friends Ryuubi and Chou Hi, whom she views as brothers. Her mixed heritage fuels deep-seated insecurity and fear of abandonment, driving her to overcompensate through exceptional combat skills and unwavering dedication to protecting her community.

As the village's strongest warrior, she embodies bravery, honesty, and diligence. Yet, her perceived inferiority as a half-breed sparks a relentless work ethic and a pacifist inclination despite her prowess. When General Sousou's forces invade, falsely accusing the Juuza of harboring Yellow Turban rebels, Kan'u negotiates their surrender. To prove the village's innocence, she leads the cat people into Sousou's army, leveraging their combat abilities.

Initially, commanders like Kakouton dismiss her due to anti-Juuza prejudice and misogyny. Through battlefield demonstrations of strategic acumen and resilience, she gradually earns his reluctant respect, though broader discrimination persists. Her loyalty remains divided between Sousou's demands and her people's welfare, evident when Juuza allegiances waver during conflicts like the recapture of Joshuu, where she collaborates with former adversaries against threats such as Ryofu.

Across subsequent engagements, including the Battle of Red Cliffs, she confronts escalating moral dilemmas. In later arcs, her decisiveness falters during alliance negotiations; she exhibits uncharacteristic stammering and emotional volatility when confronted with proposals like Princess Shou Kou's political marriage to Ryuubi. This shift highlights her struggle to reconcile warrior instincts with human political complexities. Her identity crisis intensifies upon encountering other half-breeds like Shu Yuu, forcing introspection about her place between worlds.

Key relationships define her journey: her protective bond with Ryuubi, tested by his Kinmei curse-induced violent transformations; her friction-turned-mutual recognition with Kakouton; and her mentorship of younger fighters like Kan Tei. Romantic developments vary across routes, such as Kakouton's eventual confession amid battle or Ryuubi's conflicted advances. In one narrative branch, Kan'u physically restrains Ryuubi from killing Sousou, prioritizing his humanity over vengeance—a moment underscoring her core pacifism.
