Description
Hitsugi Kirigaya, attendance number 4 of Myojo Academy's former 10th Year Class Black, presents a childlike appearance belying her 15 years. Her small, fragile frame, long teal hair often in twin pigtails, and molten amber eyes frequently cause others to underestimate her age. She typically wears a long-sleeved dark undershirt under a poffy cream one-piece dress, dark shoes, and socks. She constantly clutches a pink teddy bear hiding her primary weapon: a tranquilizer gun firing poisoned darts or releasing toxic smoke.
Raised to become a professional assassin, she operated under the alias "Angel's Trumpet" as the ace of the Datura Organization, specializing in poison. Her assassination of the daughter of Chitaru Namatame's mentor using poison during a trial directly led Chitaru to enroll in Class Black seeking revenge. Hitsugi later leaked information about Angel's Trumpet to ensure her placement in the same class, motivated by seeing Chitaru at the victim's funeral and developing an immediate fixation.
At Myojo Academy, Hitsugi maintained a meticulously crafted facade of sweetness, politeness, and shyness. This mask concealed a callous, deceptive, and remorseless nature. She exhibited profound lack of empathy, viewing human lives as expendable and referring to the weak as "ants." Her manipulative skills were extensive, leveraging her innocent looks to deceive. Chitaru Namatame was the sole exception to her emotional detachment; Hitsugi displayed genuine possessiveness and obsessive affection towards her. She poisoned classmate Shiena Kenmochi upon perceiving Shiena's romantic interest in Chitaru, deeming such feelings "unforgivable."
Her assassination attempt on Haru Ichinose occurred during the school's Venus Festival production of *Romeo and Juliet*, where Hitsugi and Chitaru played the leads. Hitsugi poisoned the prop swords beforehand. After Tokaku Azuma decontaminated the weapons, Hitsugi dramatically unveiled her identity as Angel's Trumpet to Chitaru. During the play's climax, she altered the script, provoking Chitaru to stab her with a real dagger. Hitsugi welcomed the attack, viewing it as an expression of their bond. In the manga, this followed an explicit confession of love and an offer to help Chitaru kill Angel's Trumpet—elements absent from the anime. Both versions culminated in an apparent double suicide, resulting in Hitsugi and Chitaru becoming the fifth and sixth students expelled from Class Black.
The series finale confirmed Hitsugi survived. She was later shown visiting Chitaru in a hospital rehabilitation facility, attempting to reconcile despite their foundation of lies and mutual suffering. Her original wish upon joining Class Black was to fulfill a Datura Organization mission, but this evolved into a personal desire to remain with Chitaru beyond the academy.
Hitsugi's skills centered on deception, strategy, and extensive knowledge of poisons and chemistry. She demonstrated proficiency in creating and neutralizing toxins, carrying antidotes for her own poisons. While not physically formidable, her combat strength lay in exploiting opportunities to administer poisons. Creator Sunao Minakata described her psychological profile as a "sociopath due to her upbringing and environment," distinguishing her from natural-born psychopaths like Otoya Takechi.
Her name "Hitsugi" translates to "coffin," and "Kirigaya" to "valley of paulownias." Her blood type is AB, birthplace Arakawa, Tokyo, and average sleep duration 7 hours. Her hobbies include reading. Her favorite food is milt, and she dislikes crabs due to the tedious effort required to eat them. White roses placed on her desk after expulsion symbolized innocence or childlike purity—a stark contrast to her true nature.
