Description
Lotte Yanson is a Finnish witch from a family running a magic apothecary. They specialize in spirit communication to evaluate magical furniture, immersing Lotte in spirit-based magic from childhood. Mocked by non-magical peers, she found comfort in her grandmother's teachings. Her grandmother gave her songs to invoke object spirits, which Lotte used to create comforting rainbows during hard times.

Typically calm, kind-hearted, and patient, Lotte often grounds her impulsive roommate Akko. Though generally reserved, she exhibits intense anger when deeply wronged, especially concerning her family's ancestral spirit song. Akko accidentally destroyed its sheet music before a parade, causing Lotte to withdraw emotionally with uncharacteristic coldness until reconciliation followed Akko's sincere apology. She fiercely defends friends against belittlement, confronting dismissive peers about Akko's absence at a festival.

Her magical specialty is communicating with and invoking spirits or fairies within old objects. She primarily uses family-passed songs instead of traditional spellcasting, including one potent enough to pacify hundreds of enraged fairies simultaneously. This song-based magic facilitates spirit communication without direct magical energy expenditure. Her abilities allow synchronization with spirits for advanced effects: commanding spirits to operate objects (like firing a cannon from a sunken ship to rescue Akko), generating healing fields, manipulating plants, and creating large-scale purifying barriers that damage hostile entities or induce sleep.

Beyond spirit magic, she performs standard witch capabilities like broom flight and metamorphosis magic. She owns a crystal ball for communication and accessing the magic realm's internet, frequently using it to engage with fellow fans of her beloved novel series, "Nightfall." Her dedication includes active online participation in fan communities and defending the author against criticism, reflecting sincere enthusiasm for meaningful interests.

Early development concepts included unused abilities: absorbing spirit energy to enhance physical strength, directing spirits to wield weapons in combat, or summoning a Celtic warrior's spirit using a ceremonial sword—an idea tied to a scrapped ghostly possession storyline.

Lotte's personal items often reflect her Finnish heritage, including salmiakki licorice candy, Fazer brand chocolate, and bags featuring designs from the Marimekko brand.
