TV Special
Description
The Going Merry, a caravel-class ship designed by Kaya's butler Merry approximately two years after Gol D. Roger's execution, was initially commissioned as a luxury vessel for Kaya. It was later gifted to the Straw Hat Pirates for defending Syrup Village against the Black Cat Pirates, becoming their primary transport through the East Blue and into the Grand Line until retirement.

Featuring a sheep-themed figurehead, woody brown tones, and white wooden details resembling wool, its functional areas included a combined meeting room, lounge, and helm; men’s quarters below deck; women’s quarters originally intended for Kaya; storage and cannon decks; and a bathroom. Distinct elements encompassed Luffy’s favored seat at the sheep figurehead and three mikan trees added after the Arlong Park Arc as a memento of Nami’s home. Though equipped with four cannons, they saw limited combat use.

Severe damage accumulated from Grand Line voyages, including explosions, impalement, slicing, and partial consumption. Critical keel damage during the Water 7 Arc was deemed irreparable by Galley-La shipwrights due to structural obsolescence, triggering Usopp’s vehement opposition to abandonment and his duel with Luffy, leading to temporary departure. Despite being declared unseaworthy, the ship manifested a klabautermann—a spirit embodying cherished vessels—which autonomously piloted it to Enies Lobby to rescue the crew during their conflict with CP9.

In its final journey, the ship navigated treacherous seas to retrieve the crew from Enies Lobby before succumbing to damage mid-voyage. During its Viking funeral, the klabautermann verbally expressed gratitude: "I was happy... I’m glad that I could spend it with you," acknowledging its sentience as a crew member. The funeral featured the song "Horizon Knot" and underscored themes of necessary farewells for progress. The Thousand Sunny, crafted by Franky and Galley-La, succeeded it, explicitly designed to carry forward the Merry’s spirit.

The 2013 TV special *Episode of Merry: The Tale of One More Friend* revisits these events through framing sequences where Brook inquires about the ship, prompting Usopp and Chopper to recount its history. It compresses the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs, emphasizing the klabautermann’s appearance and the funeral while streamlining battles and subplots. The special incorporates both canon and non-canon elements, such as filler arcs and adjusted settings for narrative cohesion. Animation inconsistencies from its rushed production were partially addressed in home video releases.
