Description
Celine, a sentient alien plant from Planet Plantas, first arrived as a large carnivorous sunflower gifted to Yūki Rito by Lala Satalin Deviluke for his 16th birthday. Residing in the Yuuki backyard, this initial form possessed purple petals, a central mouth lined with sharp teeth, and prehensile vine limbs. Despite her monstrous appearance, Rito provided devoted care, treating her as family. The plant displayed human-like mannerisms, sweating in humidity, wearing a scarf against the cold, and consuming ramen while still relying on sunlight and water for primary sustenance.
Afflicted by the Kare Kare disease, Celine prompted Rito and friends to retrieve an antidote from the perilous planet Misletoe. Returning, they found her desiccated form, which then germinated. A seed burst open, revealing Celine reborn as a humanoid infant. This new body featured light green hair, blue eyes, a pink-petaled flower on her head, and non-human foot anatomy. The metamorphosis surprised Momo Belia Deviluke, an expert in alien flora, who noted Celine's biology remained largely unknown.
As an infant, Celine exhibits typical toddler traits: playfulness, curiosity, and occasional fussiness. She communicates mainly through the vocalization "Mau," though Momo converses with her via plant telepathy. A recurring comedic trait is her instinctual attempts to breastfeed from female characters, often triggering accidental collisions. She enjoys video games, watching Magical Kyouko, gardening, and eating ramen. Her personality includes moments of guilt when corrected, demonstrating an understanding of discipline.
Celine harbors deep affection for Rito, viewing him as a parent. She frequently leaps onto him, causing accidental falls that cascade into comedic mishaps. This bond fuels a unique ability: consuming cola intoxicates her, prompting her head-flower to emit pollen. Inhaling this pollen causes victims to temporarily grow a head-flower and develop intense romantic feelings for Rito, mirroring Celine's own emotions. The effects fade after 30–45 minutes, often erasing memories of the episode.
Her physiology includes rare capabilities. During full moons, she temporarily matures into an adult form, gaining advanced speech and a calmer demeanor before reverting to infancy by dawn. She also exhibits surprising physical prowess, like high jumps and rapid movement while intoxicated.
Relationships shape her development. She shares a sisterly bond with Momo, who guides her behavior. Yūki Mikan acts as a motherly figure, coining her name and providing nurturing care. Kotegawa Yui is a frequent caretaker, with Celine often clinging to her; Yui occasionally envisions a familial life involving Rito and Celine. Mikado Ryouko serves as a nurturing babysitter, permitting Celine to explore her school office freely.
An adaptation discrepancy exists: the anime introduced her humanoid form without explaining her plant origins or metamorphosis, omitting the Kare Kare disease and Misletoe arc entirely.
