Description
Nana Nishigaki teaches science at Nanamori Middle School, instantly recognizable by her grayish-white hair styled with long bangs covering her right eye and her ever-present lab coat. Her carefree, straightforward personality fuels a scientific curiosity that often overrides routine responsibilities, resulting in frequent tardiness and disciplinary actions from the principal. This is primarily due to her experiments causing explosions and property damage, which have led to bans on using the science room. Despite these issues, she retains her students' trust.
Her passion for science traces back to her student years. While she initially cited a malfunctioning toy robotic puppy as the catalyst, the true spark occurred when she accidentally plugged a miniature light bulb into a main wall socket, causing an explosion. She lives approximately a mile from school and commutes by bicycle wearing a full-face helmet. Her experiments extend to her home, including a failed flight attempt using a cannon that blew off her house's roof.
Nana shares a notably close, self-described "improper" relationship with student council president Rise Matsumoto. Rise frequently volunteers as a test subject for Nana's experimental drugs and inventions. Nana is one of the few who can understand Rise's characteristically quiet speech and also cuts Rise's hair. Their activities sometimes draw attention, such as Ayano Sugiura questioning the nature of their experiments after observing Rise's embarrassed reactions.
Within the *YuruYuri* franchise, Nana appears in the first anime season (Episode 9: "I'm Not Scared of This Summer"), conducting experiments during a heatwave that lead to explosive mishaps. She returns in the second season (Episode 4: "Achoo"), where her inventions fail to help repair a clock. She also features in the spin-offs *MiniYuri* and *Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken*, and is a central character in the prequel *Touzainanboku!*, exploring her high school days alongside other Nanamori teachers. Additional appearances include the third season (Episode 6: "The Invisible Face is There").
