Description
Imagawa Yoshimoto leads the Imagawa clan from Suruga Province as a female warlord. Initially a major antagonist, she commands formidable military strength fueled by ambitions to conquer Japan, leveraging kinship ties to the Ashikaga shogunate for political legitimacy. Her forces overwhelm neighboring territories until halted by Oda faction resistance.

She exhibits a cheerful, playful demeanor, frequently engaging in kemari and maintaining an almost constant smile. This outward simplicity masks considerable strategic acumen, evidenced by calculated patience in timing attacks and swift detection of false battlefield reports. Profound arrogance defines her leadership, dismissing threats and prioritizing personal safety by deploying vassal troops like Mikawa soldiers under Motoyasu Matsudaira as expendable assets.

Her pivotal moment occurs at the Battle of Okehazama. Overconfidence leads to catastrophic defeat; while celebrating early successes with her army distracted, she falls victim to a surprise assault by Nobuna Oda’s forces during a storm. Cornered by Oda general Katsuie Shibata and facing execution, Yoshimoto displays unexpected vulnerability by screaming her fear of death. Intervention by Yoshiharu Sagara, who argues sparing her preserves a "cute girl," results in her surrender after initial resistance due to wounded pride.

Following defeat, Yoshimoto loses territorial control and military autonomy, becoming a political hostage under Oda authority. She adapts pragmatically, accepting appointment as a figurehead shogun to legitimize Nobuna’s control of Kyoto after the Ashikaga exile. Aware this role lacks real power, she embraces the prestigious title for its symbolic value, famously declaring herself a "shiny pretty figurehead." Her survival alters historical trajectories, enabling continued political influence absent in actual Sengoku records.

Complex relationships define her later arc. She treats subordinates politely despite their expendability but develops a noted attachment to Yoshiharu after his life-saving intervention, embracing him during discussions about mystical curses—an act triggering jealousy from Nobuna. This dynamic underscores her blend of calculated charm and underlying self-interest.
