Nataku Taishi, originally named Toushin Nataku Taishi, is an artificial hybrid created through genetic experimentation, fusing material from Lower World Youkai and Heaven's gods. This origin classifies him as a "heretical being," signified by his distinctive golden eyes. Li Touten orchestrated his creation to develop a powerful, obedient weapon for gaining political power in Heaven. Nataku emerged as the sole success after numerous failed attempts, known collectively as the monstrous Natakus, who also bore golden eyes. These failures were either released into the Lower World as distractions or stored in a secret lab beneath the Jade Emperor's palace.
In Heaven, Nataku holds the title of War Prince, uniquely permitted to kill within the celestial army. Despite this role, he maintains an individualistic nature and detests the hypocrisy and blame-shifting among the gods. He cannot disobey Li Touten, who treats him as a valuable tool rather than a son; Nataku pragmatically pretends this dynamic constitutes affection. His isolated childhood involved mistrust, scorn, and exploitation, earning him the unofficial moniker "Killing Puppet" due to his enforced role in executions.
Physically, Nataku appears as a slight young boy, typically dressed in white robes adorned with gold designs. His depiction varies: in *Gensoumaden Saiyuki*, he has dark hair and violet chakra, while in the *Saiyuki Gaiden OVA*, he possesses blond hair and purple eyes, later attributed to his divine heritage. His chakra shifts from violet to red in these adaptations.
Nataku's pivotal relationship is with Son Goku, a fellow golden-eyed heretic. Their friendship begins when Nataku encounters Goku during a prank in the Jade Emperor's palace. Goku's genuine, playful nature offers Nataku his first experience of unconditional acceptance. They bond over secret explorations of Heaven and plans for future adventures, like visiting hidden groves of raspberry trees, forming Nataku's emotional anchor amid his violent duties.
A tragic turning point occurs when Li Touten orders Nataku to kill Goku, declaring Heaven cannot tolerate two heretical beings. Confronting Goku in the Jade Emperor's court, Nataku injures Goku's allies but cannot deliver the fatal blow. Trapped between his father's command and his loyalty, Nataku chooses suicide, turning his sword on himself with the declaration of "cutting his strings for good." He dies in Kenren's arms, expressing regret to Goku about their unfulfilled promise to explore Heaven.
Following Li Touten's death, Nataku's barely alive body is discovered in an underground laboratory. Though his physical wounds heal, his mind retreats into catatonia. He is placed on a throne in Heaven's divine garden under Kanzeon Bosatsu's care, who observes he is "waiting for something, or more likely, someone."
In *Saiyuki Reload Blast*, Nataku reappears under unclear circumstances, reactivated but devoid of his former personality. He attacks demons indiscriminately, perceiving them as threats, and nearly kills Kougaiji before Dokugakuji's sacrifice stops him. Encountering the Sanzo party, he fails to recognize Goku, though Goku senses familiarity. Nataku later attempts to annihilate a village of peaceful youkai protected by Sharak, battling the Sanzo party. His motives remain ambiguous, and his mental state suggests he acts as a hollow instrument of Heaven's will.
