Kurara is a spotted jellyfish (Mastigias papua) from the southern Pacific Ocean, kept as a pet by Tsukimi Kurashita. Rescued from a neglectful pet store situation where cohabitation with a moon jellyfish threatened her life, Kurara's survival resulted from Kuranosuke Koibuchi's intervention.
Tsukimi anthropomorphizes Kurara, envisioning her as a princess figure whose lace-like tendrils suggest royal dresses. This perception stems from childhood aquarium visits with her deceased mother, who linked jellyfish to princesses. Serving as Tsukimi's emotional anchor, Kurara embodies beauty, grace, and maternal connections. Tsukimi frequently confides in Kurara through internal monologues, reinforcing the jellyfish's role as a confidant during loneliness or distress.
Despite Tsukimi's imaginative portrayal, Kurara possesses no sentience, personality, or biological gender. Spotted jellyfish lack complex sensory organs like eyes or mouths; her depiction as an interactive character exists solely within Tsukimi's subjective perspective. The name "Kurara" combines "kurage" (Japanese for "jellyfish") and Clara from "Heidi of the Alps."
Kurara's presence catalyzes Tsukimi's first encounter with Kuranosuke and intertwines with themes of self-acceptance and nonconformity. Her symbolism extends to Tsukimi's artistic work, inspiring jellyfish-themed dress designs central to the narrative conflict defending the Amamizukan apartment.
