Description
On-chan is a Parade Alien from the Parade Planet, serving as the mascot character for Hokkaido Television Broadcasting (HTB) since 1997. The design sports a crushed yellow spherical body with limbs, a mouth, and eyes shaped as an "o" on the right and an "n" on the left, sometimes accessorized with a small hat. This yellow hue conveys energy and cuteness. The name carries positive meanings like "Switch on!" and "On Parade!", reflecting an energetic, cheerful persona. Originally designed with rigid oval shapes, the appearance later incorporated more expressive, freehand elements.
A Sapporo-based design company developed On-chan, selected through a nationwide competition. The character debuted December 1, 1997, as part of HTB's 30th-anniversary campaign "On Parade!", initially planned for one year. Strong public reception at events like the Sapporo Snow Festival led to permanent adoption as station mascot in 1999. Early merchandise, including stuffed animals, vanished rapidly during promotions; 4,000 customers visited HTB's Sapporo Underground corner on the first sales day in August 1998. Popularity spread nationally via syndicated programs like "Wednesday's Domo Domo".
Personality traits include innate curiosity, positivity, and a strong desire to discover exciting experiences and form friendships. On-chan exhibits clumsiness yet maintains resilience, quickly recovering from setbacks through inherent optimism. A distinctive verbal trait replaces the Japanese prefix "o" with "on" for pun-based wordplay, like "on-chan 6-chan HTB" for the station's digital channel. Favorite foods include cheese and corn, while dislikes encompass crows and the personality Hiroshi Oizumi, known for physical interactions. Physically, On-chan is approximately basketball-sized.
In animated media, the character features across multiple productions: "On-chan Anime Ippoi" (1999) comprises 20 commercial spots; "On-chan's Dream Power Adventure!" (2003) is a feature-length television special for HTB's 35th anniversary; "Yumemiru, Anime on-chan" (2008) consists of 26 five-minute episodes. These animations depict On-chan engaging in curiosity-driven adventures and problem-solving.
Franchise relationships include OK-chan, portrayed as On-chan's childhood friend and romantic interest with a bright, fashionable demeanor. The pet Guchi can alter size, while rival No-chan represents On-chan's opposite personality. Additional characters like Me-chan, Tenko-chan, Tomaru-kun, Nazona Moshi, Doctor, and Assistant form the social circle.
Corporate activities involve statues at HTB headquarters, including a notable Sapporo Sosei Square installation. On-chan features in station identification campaigns, safety advertisements, and digital broadcasting watermarks. Catchphrases evolved from "Yumemiru, Chikara" to "on-chan, action!" in 2022, aligning with the 25th-anniversary celebration that introduced variations like "manmaru on-chan" and "kigurumi on-chan".
