Description
Based on historical figure Fritz Pfeffer, Albert Düssell was a Jewish dentist who fled Nazi persecution in Amsterdam. Seeking refuge, he entered hiding in the Secret Annex at Prinsengracht 263 in November 1942, becoming its eighth occupant with Otto Frank's assistance. He arrived with minimal possessions, his professional life and safety abruptly lost.
Forced into concealment, Düssell shared a cramped room with Anne Frank, a situation breeding significant tension. Anne described him in her diary as selfish and insufferable, particularly resenting his consumption of food and rigid control over their shared workspace. Disputes flared over desk usage, with Düssell prioritizing his own activities over Anne's studies. His strict views on discipline and frequent criticism of Anne, contrasted with favoritism towards her sister Margot, further strained their cohabitation.
His relationships with others in the Annex remained generally formal and distant. He maintained a cordial but reserved dynamic with Otto and Edith Frank, though openly disagreeing with Edith on Anne's upbringing. Tensions also existed with Hermann and Auguste van Pels over resource allocation and perceived selfishness. He did, however, occasionally participate in group discussions about the war or outside news, facilitated by their helpers.
