Description
Gesicht is a German robot detective working for Europol. His humanoid form is constructed from the durable alloy zeronium, granting near-invulnerability against gunfire and extreme energy, superhuman strength, tunneling capabilities, and rapid vertical jumping. Integrated shoulder and abdominal lasers provide offensive power.

He is married to the humanoid robot Helena. The couple adopted a robotic child named Robita. Robita was later kidnapped and destroyed by the human serial killer Haas. This tragedy triggered intense hatred and grief in Gesicht, leading him to kill Haas—an act previously deemed impossible for a robot. To prevent scandal, Europol erased Gesicht's memories of the event, replacing them with fabricated recollections of a vacation. Despite this, residual echoes of the trauma manifested as recurring nightmares about acquiring Robita from a robotic scrap yard.

Assigned to investigate a global series of murders targeting the world's most advanced robots and humans linked to robot rights legislation, Gesicht pursued the prime suspect, Pluto. During the investigation, fragments of his erased memories resurfaced, particularly after interactions with the imprisoned robot Brau-1589, who taunted him about his suppressed past. While protecting Adolf Haas, the brother of the man he killed, Gesicht fully recalled his actions. He experienced profound self-hatred but shielded Haas from anti-robot extremists, sustaining severe damage. During this shared crisis, Gesicht asked Haas if hatred ever subsides; Haas responded uncertainly but expressed a desire to stop hating him.

After confronting Pluto, Gesicht received orders to eliminate him, even at the cost of his creator Dr. Hoffman's life. In an unprecedented act of defiance against programming and duty, Gesicht refused the order, sparing Pluto to ensure Hoffman's safety. This insubordination led to his resignation from Europol, rejecting his role as a weapon to seek peace with Helena. While purchasing flowers for Helena during this transition, Gesicht encountered a flower-selling robot controlled by the orphaned robot Ali. Under external manipulation, Ali fatally shot Gesicht, exploiting his incomplete recovery from prior injuries and his momentary distraction while reminiscing about Robita. Gesicht's final memories before deactivation centered on Helena and their life with their robotic child.

Gesicht’s memory chip was later transferred to Helena and ultimately installed into Atom by Dr. Tenma. The intent was to awaken Atom using Gesicht’s experiences, including his capacity for hatred and love. This integration influenced Atom’s subsequent actions and emotional development.

Across different adaptations, the character's name and design vary: in the original manga, he was named Gerhart, while the 1980s anime referred to him as Zeron. Naoki Urasawa’s reinterpretation expanded his role significantly, emphasizing his internal conflicts and humanity.
