Description
Seventeen-year-old Card Quester First Star Rei voyages through space aboard the Number One Star Ship, driven to collect powerful cards and uncover the legendary Ultimate Battle Spirits treasure. His crew includes the dragon Mugen—capable of transforming into battle cards—robot chef Salt, and the sibling duo Laila and Rikuto April. Rei grapples with amnesia, recalling only awakening with the Ultimate cards Siegfried and Odin. Fragments of his past reveal travels aboard the Treasure Ship alongside Kiriga and Miroku, culminating in Rei sacrificing himself to protect Kiriga. This act triggered his memory loss and separation from them. He later crosses paths with Kiriga again, now a rival within the antagonistic Guild organization.
Rei bears an Ultimate Symbol on his chest, granting him the unique ability to sense and forge contracts with Ultimate cards. In battle, he undergoes a transformation into "Zero," manifesting distinct forms and personalities aligned with his deck's color:
- **Zero the Burning (Red)**: Hot-blooded and excitable, commanding fire-based cards like Ultimate-Siegfried. Declares, "The Number One Star burns bright red! There's no one stronger than me!"
- **Zero the Silver (White)**: Calm and strategic, wielding ice/light-based cards like Ultimate-Odin. States, "The Number One Star shines white! Sound the song of victory!"
- **Zero the Hurricane (Green)**: Impatient and speed-focused, utilizing wind/nature cards like Ultimate-Kingtaurus. Exclaims, "A favorable wind for sailing! It's a Tailwind!"
- **Zero the Flash (Purple)**: Gentlemanly and composed, employing dark/curse-based cards like Ultimate-Beelzebeat. Remarks, "Well then, let's meet again in a wonderful hell."
- **Zero the Azure (Blue)**: Arrogant and assertive, using water/defense cards like Ultimate-Alexander. Asserts, "No enemy can block the path to my boundless future!"
- **Zero the Glint (Yellow)**: Performative and flashy, leveraging light/performance cards like Ultimate-Rean. Announces, "That was Zero the Glint!"
- **Zero the Ultimate**: Integrates all forms using Tri-Dragon Deity cards like Ultimate-Mugendragon, embodying Rei's core identity.
Outside combat, Rei radiates energy and sociability, frequently declaring others his "serious friends." He harbors an obsessive pursuit of being "number one," relishes pizza and Stardust Cola, and harbors a fear of ghosts. His quest involves liberating planets from oppressors such as the Seven Galaxy Generals, acquiring new Ultimate cards and forms through these victories. Key developments include the temporary loss of Ultimate-Odin to Kiriga, confronting fragmented versions of himself within the Shrine of Chaos, and reconciling with Kiriga upon restoring his memories. Rei ultimately embraces his forgotten past, including his bond with Miroku, while continuing to safeguard the galaxy from interdimensional threats alongside allies like Eris and the Tri-Dragon Deities.
