Patricia Kino is the civilian identity of the Sailor Guardian known as Sailor Jupiter; in the original Japanese version she is called Makoto Kino, while some English adaptations use a different civilian name. She is one of the five Inner Sailor Guardians who fight alongside Sailor Moon, and in the classic anime she is the fourth guardian to join the team. She is introduced as a transfer student who is noticeably taller and physically stronger than most girls her age, and her tough appearance, combined with rumors that she was expelled from her previous school for brawling, makes her seem intimidating at first. In reality she is gentle, warm, and caring, and she often feels lonely because people misjudge her.

Her background explains much of her personality. She lost both parents in an airplane accident when she was young and has lived alone in an apartment ever since, which made her independent and self-sufficient but also isolated. The crash left her with a lasting fear of airplanes. To take care of herself, she became an accomplished cook and baker, and she also developed a love of gardening and flower arranging. She believes that cooking for someone is a way of showing love and frequently tries to win people over with her homemade food. Her deepest dream is to get married and one day open a cake and flower shop. She enjoys reading romance novels, ice skating, practicing martial arts, playing video games, and shopping, and she dislikes cheaters, airplanes, and physics.

Personality-wise, she balances strength with softness. She is romantic and, in the anime, very eager to find a boyfriend, often falling for boys who remind her of an older former boyfriend who broke her heart. That experience left her with a pattern of chasing similar young men, but it also made her a thoughtful source of romantic advice for her friends. She is extremely loyal, protective, and quick to defend others, whether by standing up to bullies in her daily life or by risking herself in battle as a guardian.

Her main motivations are to protect the people and world she cares about and to overcome the loneliness that followed her parents' death. Her friendship with Usagi Tsukino, Sailor Moon, is central to her development. When they first met, Usagi showed no fear of her size or strength, and that acceptance helped her open up and find a sense of belonging. Her bonds with the other Inner Guardians, Ami, Rei, and Minako, and with Chibiusa strengthen over time, and in the anime she also develops a recurring crush on Motoki Furuhata, a young man who works at a local arcade.

In the Sailor Moon SuperS season, she takes a significant step forward as a warrior. She awakens her more powerful form as Super Sailor Jupiter, which gives her access to stronger techniques and a transformed uniform. Her new power is demonstrated in a key moment of the season when a Lemures summoned by Fish Eye threatens Super Sailor Moon and Super Sailor Chibi Moon; she steps in by transforming into Super Sailor Jupiter and using the powerful Super Supreme Thunder attack to save them. Throughout the season she works with the other guardians to protect the dreams of children and to fight the forces threatening them, and she shows particular care for Chibiusa.

Her development across the series is marked by growing confidence and emotional openness. She goes from being a guarded, self-reliant girl who expected to be judged to a dependable and nurturing member of the team who can be both a fierce fighter and a comforting presence. Her abilities reflect that duality. As the strongest physically of the Inner Guardians, she possesses superhuman strength that lets her lift a full-grown adult or stop a falling stone pillar. Her Sailor powers are tied to electricity, thunder, and nature; although her element is associated with wood in the Japanese naming tradition, most of her attacks channel lightning, a reference to the Roman god Jupiter. Her signature techniques include Supreme Thunder, which draws lightning through an antenna extending from her tiara; Supreme Thunder Dragon, a stronger variant that shapes the lightning into a dragon; Sparkling Wide Pressure, which sends an electric sphere from her hands; and, in her Super form, Jupiter Oak Evolution, which hurls sharp oak leaves at enemies, alongside the especially powerful Super Supreme Thunder. Some versions of the character also use flower-based techniques such as Flower Hurricane and the plant-related Jupiter Coconut Cyclone. She is often described as the guardian of protection and of thunder and courage, a summary that captures her combination of raw power, care for others, and bravery.
