Masao Saito, a thief condemned for his crimes to hell's lowest level, endures torment within a lake of blood among other sinners. A spider's thread suddenly appears from a distant heavenly light. Recognizing it as salvation offered for his single minor act of kindness—sparing a spider's life—he seizes it and climbs upward. As he ascends, Masao looks down and sees countless other damned souls following him on the thread. Fearing it will break under their weight and desperate to secure his own escape, he shouts for them to release it, trying to dislodge them. This selfish act of rejecting compassion causes the fragile thread to snap. Masao Saito plummets back into the lake of blood, doomed to remain. His chance at transcendence vanishes, concluding his narrative arc.
