Description
Shirō Sanada holds the dual role of executive and technical officer aboard the space battleship Yamato, managing scientific analysis, engineering, and strategic operations. A top graduate of MIT and the National Space Defense Academy, he emerged as a leading authority in wave-motion theory. His pioneering work on the Yamato Plan spearheaded the development of the wave-motion engine and the design of the wave-motion gun—technologies critical to the ship’s interstellar capabilities.

During the Great Garmillas War, Sanada served in the Strategy Department’s 9th Section, playing a key role in Program Yamato’s mission to retrieve the Cosmo Reverse System from Iscandar. His analytical precision and logical rigor solidified his reputation as Earth’s foremost intellect. He forged a close professional rapport with Mamoru Kodai, their mutual respect born of contrasting methodologies—Kodai’s intuition balancing Sanada’s systematic analysis. Earlier, he partnered with science officer Kaoru Niimi during their academic years, though their interactions sometimes sparked friction.

After the war, a cryptic message from Teresa of Terezart drew him back to Yamato during the Gatlantis Campaign. There, he challenged the Earth Federation’s directives and championed Susumu Kodai’s rescue. Later, he assumed command of the dreadnought-class battlecarrier Hyuga, engaging in peacekeeping operations and frontline conflicts, including deployments in the Salezar system and the Icarus Observatory incident. His leadership extended to monitoring Sasha Iscandar Kodai, Mamoru’s hybrid daughter, underscoring his dedication to humanity’s survival.

Though reserved and socially reticent, Sanada cultivated profound bonds with colleagues like Tokugawa and Niimi. His strategic brilliance and composure shone during crises, exemplified when he deferred command to Susumu Kodai during a surprise assault, demonstrating unwavering trust in his crew’s capabilities. Post-mission, he shaped Earth’s political-military strategies long after missions ended, prioritizing unity over division and upholding rationality as humanity’s ultimate safeguard.
