Description
Shirou Sanada was born on February 11, 2169, in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. He graduated at the top of his class from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before returning to Japan to study at the National Space Defense Academy. There, he formed close friendships with classmates Mamoru Kodai and Kaoru Niimi despite social difficulties. His academic mentor, a leading expert in wave-motion theory, retired in 2193 due to a hippocampal disorder causing daily memory loss.

Following the outbreak of the Great Garmillas War in 2191, Sanada joined the United Nations Cosmo Force, assigned to the Strategy Department 9th Section within the Far-East District Staff Office. This section became the core of Program Yamato, aiming to build a vessel capable of reaching Iscandar to retrieve the Cosmo Reverse System and save Earth from planetary bombing. Sanada studied the Iscandarian wave-motion engine plans provided by Yurisha Iscandar. By refining solutions to complex wave-motion equations discovered by his mentor, he invented the Wave-motion Gun, a powerful energy weapon mounted on the space battleship Yamato.

In 2198, Sanada concealed the suicidal nature of Operation M from his friend Mamoru Kodai, who commanded the destroyer Yukikaze during the mission. This omission burdened him with profound guilt after Kodai’s death. In 2199, he was assigned to the Yamato as Executive Officer and Chief Science Officer for its journey to Iscandar. During the mission, he demonstrated analytical prowess countering crises like dimensional submarine attacks and resolving conflicts such as the Beemela 4 mutiny. He allowed junior officers like Susumu Kodai to assume command during emergencies, observing their development with approval.

Sanada’s leadership was tested during the events chronicled in Odyssey of the Celestial Ark. When the Yamato became trapped in an extradimensional realm, he supported Kodai’s command decisions during engagements with Gatlantis forces and navigated the crew through reality-warping environments, underscoring his role as a stabilizing presence amid psychological and physical threats.

Following the Yamato’s return to Earth in 2200, Sanada opposed the Earth Federation government’s militaristic policies and participated in efforts to rescue Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori. After Yamato’s reactivation in 2202, he received a telepathic message from the entity Teresa and rejoined the ship to combat the Gatlantis Empire. Post-conflict, he captained the battlecarrier Hyuga during the 65th Escort Corps’ peace mission to the Salezar system. Dismissed from this post afterward, he was later reassigned to Yamato at the Icarus Observatory for Operation DAD. There, he led the observation team for Sasha Iscandar Kodai, the hybrid daughter of his late friend Mamoru Kodai. Sanada subsequently resumed his position as Executive Officer for Yamato’s voyage to Dezariam.

Personality-wise, Sanada maintained a reserved and analytical demeanor, often serving as a voice of reason. His guilt over Mamoru Kodai’s death and the ethical implications of wave-motion technology influenced his commitment to protecting colleagues and seeking peaceful resolutions. Though introverted, he formed enduring bonds with the Yamato crew, evident in his mentorship of younger officers and dedication to Sasha’s wellbeing.
