TV-Series
Description
Masako Inogashira, also known as Number Eight, is a member of the antagonistic Thousand Spirits Group, initially handling delivery missions. Her severe lack of directional sense constantly complicates these tasks, as she frequently gets lost even in familiar places and cannot use navigation systems due to budget constraints. She expresses fierce loyalty to the Numbers and pride in her position, though this loyalty later wavers. Her personality mixes friendliness with frequent complaining and notable obliviousness to her surroundings.
A significant part of her past is her romantic relationship with Kyouji Kawatou, Card Sensei or Number Five. She harbors strong negative feelings following his departure, initially dismissing him as a coward. This history surfaces painfully when Smile taunts her about resembling Card Sensei. She treasures the "Angel Voice" card received from him during their relationship, keeping it as a personal charm despite recognizing its sarcastic intent due to her tone-deaf singing. Her lingering emotional connection becomes evident when she later uses Angel Voice against him in battle while venting her frustrations.
Her path crosses the main characters when she identifies Toppa Bashin as a chosen card battler and challenges him. After underestimating and losing to him, she fails to provide the customary X-rare card reward. Later, losing a battle to Striker, she awards him the X-rare "The Duke Kingtaurus" and a High Ranker Pass. Upon finally locating Bashin, she gives him a High Ranker Pass too.
Assigned by Number Nine to monitor the chosen card battlers after Card Sensei's permanent resignation, she assumes the undercover identity of a music teacher at Bashin's middle school. This role leads to accidental encounters, like colliding with Meganeko (Fumiko Otonashi) and discussing Bashin. Fearing exposure when Meganeko spots a dropped Battle Spirits card, Masako claims it is merely a charm from someone important. Later, borrowing Bashin's deck, she battles Meganeko after becoming the club advisor; losing this match solidifies her shift towards supporting the children.
Accompanying Bashin's group to Kyoto to confront J (Jack Knight), she reunites with Card Sensei, who urges her to protect the children. She resists, asserting her continued loyalty to the Numbers and condemning his betrayal. However, subtle shifts show growing care for the children, like expressing happiness over Bashin's academic improvement. When Seven leaves Bashin's team, she joins as the sixth member of Team Shomen Toppa to maintain their tournament eligibility, an action seen as betrayal by other Numbers. Number Nine tests her loyalty by assigning her to deliver King Uchuuchouten Cup invitations.
During this delivery, Card Sensei intercepts her at the Sawaragi mansion with her last dropped invitation. He challenges her to admit her changed feelings toward the children, prompting her to initiate a battle. Throughout this confrontation, she vents her emotions and deploys Angel Voice. Card Sensei counters by confessing that her voice, even tone-deaf, remains an "Angel Voice" to him and declares his love. This prompts Masako to recall their positive history, leading to forgiveness and reconciliation. After this battle, she reveals her true identity as Number Eight to the chosen card battlers.
Subsequently, she recruits the retired Number Ten to confront Number Nine's plans. After this fails, she departs but is captured by Number Nine's followers. During the King Uchuuchouten Cup, she and other Numbers undergo brainwashing, forcing her to partner with Number Nine in a victorious tag match against Striker and Suiren. Freedom is restored through the efforts of J, Hayami Bashin, and their pets, allowing her to witness Bashin's final matches. She continues teaching at Toaru Middle School afterwards, maintaining her characteristic arguments with Smile.
In the manga continuity, she appears as a Numbers Elite member disapproving of Smile's inclusion, later assisting Bashin against him without the anime's detailed relationship dynamics or undercover teaching role. Her deck utilizes purple and green attributes, featuring cards like "The SevenShogun Destlord", "The SevenShogun Pandemium", "The Duke Kingtaurus", "Angel Voice", and temporarily "The TwinRowdy Diranos" (later given to Bashin). Her battle record includes losses against Bashin (Episodes 8, 13, 23), Striker (Episode 12), Meganeko (Episode 33), Number Nine (Episode 27), and Card Sensei (Episode 43), alongside a tag victory with Striker against unnamed opponents (Episode 40) and a tag win with Number Nine against Striker and Suiren (Episodes 47-48).
