Dark Matter is a black bear character with blue triangular inner ears, yellow eyes, and a tortilla-colored snout and belly, typically wearing a red scarf. He initially appears as Kumata. Having acquired magic abilities in the past, he faced fear from humans and other bears, leading to isolation and loneliness. This resentment motivated his plan to steal the Wishing Stone during the Grand Magic Festival, intending to erase all magicians. When the Wishing Stone chose Mofurun instead, he abducted her. Posing as the friendly Kumata, he befriended Mofurun in a bear village, building her a cookie house and offering treats. After Mofurun tried to return to her friends, he revealed himself as Dark Matter, capturing Liko and threatening harm to force Mofurun to grant his wish. His aggression peaked when he attacked Mofurun after she transformed into Cure Mofurun to protect her friends, accidentally crushing her Linkle Stone in rage and rendering her lifeless. Witnessing Mofurun's lifeless state triggered shock and sorrow in him, revealing his true wish was not destruction but to have Mofurun as a friend forever. His emotional breakdown caused his magic to spiral out of control, transforming him into a giant shadow entity called Shadow Matter. This entity engulfed the Magic World, nullifying other magic and turning people into stone statues. During the chaos, Mirai's unwavering belief in Mofurun’s ideals rallied the Magic World inhabitants. Their collective wishes, channeled through Miracle Lights, revived Mofurun and empowered the Cures to defeat Shadow Matter with the Heartful Rainbow attack. Following the battle, Kumata reverted to a non-magical state. He expressed remorse for his actions, and Mofurun forgave him. Though invited to join her and the Cures, he chose to stay in the bear community, where he was finally accepted. An Animage issue suggested he may have been an unwitting agent of the group Never Ending Chaos, though he remained unaware of this connection. He later made a brief, non-speaking cameo appearance flying on a magic carpet in episode 50.
