Shigeo Kageyama, nicknamed Mob, is a middle school student possessing immense psychic abilities. His powers first manifested in childhood, resulting in an incident where he unintentionally injured his younger brother Ritsu during a confrontation with bullies. This caused him to associate his emotions with dangerous outbursts, leading him to suppress his feelings as a protective measure.
He later became an assistant to Arataka Reigen, a self-proclaimed psychic who taught him moral principles, including the idea that psychic powers do not make one inherently superior to others and should never be used against people. These teachings became foundational to his worldview, though Reigen's lack of psychic abilities and exploitative motives created underlying tension in their mentor-student relationship.
Initially, Shigeo exhibits a passive and socially anxious personality, struggling to express emotions or assert himself. He holds a low opinion of his non-psychic abilities, viewing himself as physically weak and academically unremarkable. This drives him to join the Body Improvement Club to develop his fitness and self-confidence, motivated partly by a desire to impress his childhood crush, Tsubomi. His moral compass emphasizes kindness and forgiveness; he consistently offers empathy and second chances to adversaries, like Teruki Hanazawa after a violent confrontation and Minori Asagiri following months of psychological torment in a mental world created by the esper Mogami Keiji.
His psychic abilities encompass telekinesis, energy absorption and transference, astral projection, spiritual awareness, and chlorokinesis. These powers are intrinsically linked to his emotions: suppressed feelings accumulate as a percentage meter, and reaching 100% triggers explosive releases tied to specific emotional states. These include Rage during battles with Dimple or Toichiro Suzuki, Courage against Mogami and Suzuki, Compassion toward Suzuki's loneliness, and Resignation when forced to incapacitate Suzuki. An unstable ???% state emerges when he is unconscious or critically injured, unleashing uncontrolled power driven by subconscious instincts.
Across his experiences, Shigeo undergoes significant development. The six months spent enduring bullying without his powers in Mogami's mental world made him less naive about human cruelty, yet he emerged with greater appreciation for his real-world support system. This ordeal also increased his willingness to question Reigen's authority, leading him to temporarily leave Spirits and Such Consultation Office after recognizing his mentor's manipulative tendencies.
During conflicts with the Claw organization, he demonstrates evolving pragmatism, such as using aggressive force against Toichiro Suzuki despite his pacifist principles. His compassion remains central; he stays with Suzuki during a self-destruct sequence to prevent him from dying alone, an act that ultimately redeems Suzuki.
In later events, he confronts Dimple's takeover of the Divine Tree, choosing trust over violence to reach his friend. When a near-fatal accident occurs while rushing to confess to Tsubomi, his ???% state emerges and rampages until Reigen admits his own deceit and encourages Shigeo to accept himself fully. This reconciliation allows Shigeo to integrate his suppressed emotions and psychic power, achieving emotional equilibrium.
After confessing to Tsubomi and being rejected, he continues as vice-president of the Body Improvement Club, maintaining friendships and a balanced perspective on his abilities. His journey concludes with a stable acceptance of both his powers and ordinary life, free from the fear of his emotions.
