TV-Series
Description
Kyoya Gaen emerges as a primary antagonist spanning multiple seasons. Initially the head of the Gaen Financial Group, he funds Aibo Academy and manufactures both Core Deck Cases and Dark Core Deck Cases. Publicly, Kyoya projects a charismatic, polite, and widely admired philanthropist persona. Privately, he reveals a cold, manipulative, and remorseless nature, viewing friendship exclusively as a tool for control. He systematically discards allies deemed useless, betraying Rouga Aragami after years of feigned friendship and orchestrating Terumi Kuchinawa's memory erasure.

His formative backstory involves encountering Rouga in a rundown town during their youth. After a Buddyfight, Kyoya offered friendship while secretly testing Rouga's loyalty; he intentionally misplayed to see if Rouga would correct him, establishing his pattern of exploiting trust. Inheriting the Gaen Financial Group later, he discovered Darkness Dragon World, its monster Azi Dahaka, and Disaster Force—a power enabling real-world manifestations of card effects that fuels portals to Darkness Dragon World. He formed the group "Disaster," deceiving most members into believing they would use this power to protect the world.

In Season 1, Kyoya masterminded schemes to corrupt others using Dark Cores. He manipulated Tasuku Ryuenji by framing the Buddy Police as corrupt (after secretly corrupting them himself), leading Tasuku to join Disaster as the Purgatory Knight. Kyoya hosted the Gaen Cup tournament to distribute Dark Cores globally, falsely claiming Disaster Force could repel an invasion from Darkness Dragon World. His true plan aimed to open invasion gates, allowing him to rebuild society under his rule by eliminating individuality. Defeated by Gao Mikado when Future Force closed the portals, he escaped arrest due to destroyed evidence. Gao later offered friendship, prompting a hesitant but minor shift in Kyoya's perspective; he relinquished control of Aibo Academy yet declined to socialize.

During Season 2, Kyoya reappeared monitoring Gao's battles. He supplied energy to help Tasuku travel to the future and expressed interest in ruling a unified world during a broadcast of a dystopian future. He also revealed providing a Dark Core to Ikazuchi through Sofia Saharov, intending to save the world from Yamigedo to bolster his public image as a hero.

In *Triple D*, Kyoya returned seeking the "Ultimate Dragon Power" to forge an invincible Dragon Ein card. He challenged Gao Mikado and Gaito Kurouzu, displaying intense interest in Bal Dragon's hidden abilities. His Dragon Ein deck evolved into Dragon Zwei, focusing on Purgatory Knights and Azi Dahaka's enhanced forms like Great Demonic End Dragon and Black Sky Sun Dragon Azi Dahaka Daeva. His strategies leveraged abilities to attack repeatedly or disrupt opponents' resources, notably through the colossal Demonic Dragon Deity of the Black Sun, Gaen. This arc culminated in a World Buddyfight Championship match against Noboru Kodo and later Gao, where his ambitions for ultimate power were thwarted.

Later seasons depicted further deck evolution: His Dragon Zwei deck incorporated "Supreme Dragon Deity of Creations" and "Wings of Creation," while an Ace side story featured "Wings of Atonement," symbolizing a thematic shift toward creation rather than demise.

Kyoya's combat style utilized versatile Dragon-themed cards across worlds. His signature Dragon Ein flag allowed unrestricted use of Dragon attribute cards at the cost of starting with 4 cards and 12 Life. He employed Ancient World spells to mitigate hand size and Dragon Shields for defense. Key tactics included using Dragon Throne to increase field size, summoning Azi Dahaka to clear fields, then equipping Aqulta Gwaneff upon its destruction to force direct attacks while drawing protective shields.
