TV-Series
Description
Kei Miyanoshita is a six-year-old first-grade student in Class 2 at Amanogawa Elementary School, born in 1994. He possesses fair skin, short purple-gray hair, and brown eyes, taking after his father. His usual outfit consists of a light blue long-sleeved shirt featuring an orange/red rectangle and the letter "K", slate-gray shorts, and distinctive yellow calf-high boots. At night, he changes into black-and-white spotted cow pajamas.

He is the younger brother of Satsuki Miyanoshita and the son of Reiichirou Miyanoshita. His mother, Kayako Miyanoshita, died from illness in 1995, creating a lasting strain within the family. Kei frequently voices his loneliness and profound longing for his mother. He forms a deep attachment to the family cat, Kaya, even sneaking her to school hidden in his backpack. When the demon Amanojaku possesses Kaya, Kei persists in calling the possessed cat "Kaya," while others use the demon's name, fostering an unexpected bond between the boy and the entity.

Characterized as shy, sweet, and easily frightened, Kei is often labeled a crybaby due to his frequent tears. He exhibits naivety and immaturity, sometimes appearing clumsy. His fears escalate dramatically when family members face supernatural threats, mirroring his deep anxiety about losing another loved one. Nevertheless, he experiences emotional growth throughout the series, gradually coming to terms with his mother's death.

The original Japanese version presents Kei without indications of neurodivergence. However, the English adaptation portrays him with an unspecified mental disability, including references to dyslexia. This version shows him struggling to read aloud, such as reversing phrases from the Ghost Diary. It also incorporates derogatory language directed at him and depicts him discussing inappropriate topics like sex workers and the Special Olympics, elements absent from the original material.

Kei befriends Hajime Aoyama and Leo Kakinoki, viewing them as older brother figures, and enjoys playing with Momoko Koigakubo. He unintentionally demonstrates a unique ability to connect with spirits, forming bonds with entities like Datto and Amanojaku. During a sports festival, he befriends Datto, the ghost of a boy killed in a car accident; this friendship ultimately aids Datto in redeeming himself and protecting Kei.

Despite his fears, Kei occasionally shows courage when his sister or father is threatened by ghosts. He worries intensely about Satsuki's safety and becomes distraught confronting situations where family members are endangered. His relationship with Amanojaku evolves from initial fear to mutual loyalty, with Kei expressing sadness when the demon departs Kaya's body. By the series' conclusion, having witnessed all ghosts sealed away, he attends his mother's second memorial service, signaling his acceptance of her passing.
