Juliet Douglas, codenamed Sloth, emerges as a homunculus accidentally forged by Edward and Alphonse Elric during their ill-fated alchemical experiment to revive their mother, Trisha Elric. The failed ritual left her as a malformed amalgamation of flesh and bone until Dante, an ancient alchemist, intervened. By supplying red stones, Dante reshaped her into a humanoid form mirroring Trisha’s likeness, recruiting her as a covert operative. Adopting the alias Juliet Douglas, she infiltrated the military as Führer King Bradley’s secretary—a position strategically leveraged for espionage. Her covert actions included luring Maes Hughes into a fatal trap orchestrated by fellow homunculi Lust and Envy.
As Juliet, her appearance echoes Trisha but diverges in subtle details: loose, flowing hair replaces the signature side ponytail, and her eye color shifts. In her true homunculus state, her hair darkens to black with green-brown undertones, her eyes adopt a pale violet hue, and her attire transforms into a dark purple dress adorned with crimson patterns. The ouroboros emblem above her left breast marks her artificial origin.
Sloth’s abilities revolve around liquefying her body, allowing stealthy infiltration through waterways, rapid mobility, and lethal aquatic assaults via forced drowning. While her homunculus-form dress shares this fluid adaptability, her secretary uniform remains susceptible to conventional damage. Emotionally detached and driven by existential despair, she embodies her sin through apathy rather than lethargy. Inheriting Trisha’s memories fuels her resentment toward the Elrics, whom she blames for her fractured identity. She seeks their demise, hoping to sever her tortured connection to their past.
Her complex dynamic with Wrath, the homunculus Pride’s protégé, oscillates between maternal affection and calculated distance. Tasked as his caretaker, she vacillates between nurturing him and resisting emotional ties under Dante’s manipulation. This internal conflict culminates during her final clash with the Elrics in an abandoned warehouse. Exploiting Alphonse’s compassion, she nearly overwhelms him until weakened by proximity to Trisha’s remains and Lust’s betrayal. Edward seals her fate by transmuting her body into ethanol, triggering her dissolution. With her last breath, she admonishes the brothers to “clean up after yourselves”—a parting phrase leaving her intent open to interpretation, hovering between lingering kinship and bitter irony.
