Description
Originally a human woodsman named Nick Chopper in Munchkin Country, he fell in love with Nimmie Amee. The Wicked Witch of the East, motivated either by bribery from Nimmie Amee's employer or to prevent their elopement, enchanted his axe. This enchantment caused him to sever his own limbs and torso piece by piece. After each accident, the tinsmith Ku-Klip replaced the lost parts with tin, culminating in his entire body, including his head, becoming tin. His consciousness transferred, but convinced the loss of his organic heart prevented him from loving, he abandoned his plans to marry Nimmie Amee.

Later, caught in a rainstorm while chopping wood, he rusted solid and remained immobilized for a year. Dorothy Gale discovered him along the Yellow Brick Road. After oiling his joints to free him, he joined her quest to the Emerald City, hoping the Wizard would grant him a heart. Alongside the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, he faced numerous perils. His axe proved instrumental in building bridges and defending against threats like wild beasts. He demonstrated inherent compassion, weeping profoundly when accidentally crushing an insect, yet maintained he lacked a heart.

The Wizard provided a symbolic heart made of silk stuffed with sawdust, which satisfied his desire. Following Dorothy's departure, he ruled the Winkie Country as its emperor. He commissioned a palace entirely of tin, featuring tin gardens and statues of his friends. To prevent rusting, a vulnerability worsened by rain or tears, he later had himself nickel-plated. He remained prominent in Oz, commanding Princess Ozma's army and serving as defense counsel.

Years later, prompted by the wanderer Woot, he embarked on a quest to find Nimmie Amee, accompanied by the Scarecrow and Woot. They encountered Captain Fyter, another tin man transformed by Ku-Klip after courting Nimmie Amee following Nick's departure. Both sought her hand. At Ku-Klip's workshop, they discovered their discarded human parts combined into a composite being named Chopfyt, who possessed Fyter's head and limbs from both men. They found Nimmie Amee married to Chopfyt. She declined their proposals, content with her domestic life despite Chopfyt's unpleasantness, forcing the Tin Woodman to confront his past choices.

He frequently debated the Scarecrow on the relative importance of a heart versus brains. Ironically, he consistently exhibited deep empathy and tenderness, such as refusing to allow harm to a butterfly. His inherent kindness contrasted his belief that he needed a physical heart to feel. He valued his durable tin form, considering it superior to his flesh body, and identified solely with his tin existence, rejecting his human past.

Other narratives reimagine his origin: one depicts him as Boq, a Munchkin transformed into tin by Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) to save his life after a botched love spell by Nessarose (the Wicked Witch of the East). Another portrays him as Stanum, a woodsman cursed by the Wicked Witch of the North and seeking aid from Zelena (the Wicked Witch of the West). These variations retain themes of enforced metallic transformation and lost love.
