Description
Arata Miyako joins Shinjuku's Nocturnal Community Relations Division as a new public servant, tasked with mitigating paranormal incidents involving supernatural entities called "Anothers." He possesses wavy auburn hair with bangs and distinctive red eyes, a striking resemblance to the legendary Heian-era exorcist Abe no Seimei. This likeness frequently causes Anothers to mistake him for the ancient figure.

He inherits the rare hereditary ability "Ears of Sand," granting him the unique capacity to understand and communicate in all non-human languages, including those of Anothers. This ability becomes central to his work. Though Arata initially dismissed his grandfather's claim of their family's descent from Seimei, later developments suggest a clearer bloodline connection. He lives with his parents in Kagurazaka following his grandfather's death.

Arata exhibits a gentle and compassionate personality, prioritizing understanding Anothers' perspectives and resolving conflicts diplomatically. This contrasts with colleagues who view Anothers as threats, sometimes causing friction, particularly with Reiji Senda, who emphasizes preventing Anothers from endangering humans over understanding them. A difference exists between media portrayals: the manga depicts him as blunt and direct, while the anime presents him as more expressive and measured.

Key relationships define his experiences. He maintains a longstanding friendship with Izumi Matsuno, occasionally showing deeper affection like blushing at her appearance in traditional attire or rushing to her aid. Izumi later assists his work by sharing relevant stories after learning about Anothers. Professionally, tension exists with Satoru Kanoichi, a metropolitan official harboring deep hatred toward Anothers due to past trauma; their conflicting philosophies—Arata's emphasis on dialogue versus Satoru's lethal methods—frustrate Arata during joint investigations. He also forms a significant connection with Huehuecóyotl (Kohaku), an Aztec trickster god who previously interacted with Seimei and now takes interest in Arata.

Arata's reputation expands across Tokyo's wards, leading other divisions to request his assistance for serious or communicative Another cases. He evolves from initial uncertainty to proactively investigating his connection to Seimei after recurring acknowledgments of his resemblance. This development involves reconciling his identity with his ancestor's legacy while navigating dangers posed by hostile Anothers like Azazel, whom colleague Kyoichi Sakaki holds responsible for his sister's disappearance. Despite occasional challenges, Arata consistently employs his ability to mediate between humans and Anothers, seeking peaceful resolutions even in high-stakes situations.
