Sage safeguards the Garden of Clouds, a realm floating above Earth, primarily protecting Houou, the mythical phoenix whose existence guarantees warmth and peace across all worlds. He performs this duty alongside Muta, a giant flying squirrel who aids in transportation and shares the concern for Houou's safety.

Sage first appears during a flight with Muta, carrying Houou's precious egg. Despite Muta's urgent warnings, Sage falls asleep mid-journey and accidentally drops the egg. This egg eventually hatches on Earth, revealing Houou in its initial, small, warm bird form, named Hinata by the girl Hikari. Sage later locates Hinata on Earth, reunites with the creature, and expresses deep affection through a heartfelt embrace. He then transports Hinata, Hikari, Nagisa, and Honoka to the Garden of Clouds using a magical beanstalk. This bean sprouts from a seed when he chants "Nyokinyoki Nororo, Nyokinyoki Nororo, Nyokinyoki Nororo. Nyoko!" and vanishes when he recites "Nyoronyoro Kyero, Nyoronyoro Kyero!".

Within the Garden of Clouds, Sage explains Houou's critical significance: the creature's life cycle sustains global warmth and peace. When a Houou's life ends, it lays a single egg, and Sage's mission involves raising the resulting chick into its full phoenix form. He reassures Pollun that Houou will never be alone under their guardianship. During Freezen and Frozen's attack, Sage witnesses Pretty Cure's initial battle against a Zakenna and later observes their struggle against the ice beings. When Luminous becomes separated from Black and White, Sage provides the remaining magical bean seed to aid their pursuit. Together with Muta, he actively assists Luminous in protecting the captured Hinata, physically carrying them away from danger at a critical moment.

After Houou matures into its full phoenix form and Freezen and Frozen are defeated, Sage participates in the emotional farewell to Hinata. He remains present during the characters' departure from the Garden of Clouds.
