Gendō is an old esoteric Buddhist monk with martial arts abilities and a drinking problem, serving as the incarnation of the Holy Beast Genbu. He was involved in thwarting an attempt by esotericists on Mount Koya to summon the Four Holy Beasts into human bodies in 1971. In 1989, he arrives in Shinjuku, Tokyo, to rescue two party girls, Tomoyo and Hiroko, from a cult seeking the incarnation of Suzaku. The next morning, he meets his former student, Kyoichi Hiyu, the incarnation of Byakko. Gendō reveals that the forces of Seiryu seek to exploit the power of all four beasts and that the cult leader, Miki Chiyoe, is the son of Toshiro Chiyoe, the previous Seiryu incarnation whom Gendō slew. Suspecting Kyoichi's girlfriend Shiho may be Suzaku, they go to meet her and are intercepted by Miki’s team. Gendō duels and kills the enemy commander Sakaki using grotesque powers. After Kyoichi and Miki are seemingly killed in a subsequent fight, Gendō and Shiho take refuge in a temple. When Shiho senses Kyoichi is alive but失控 in Tokyo, they search for him and are attacked by Chiyoe forces under the lieutenant Mukuri. They are saved by two monk fighters, Ryora and Kinshi, reinforcements from Mount Koya. The monks locate and subdue the feral Kyoichi, but Mukuri kidnaps Shiho and unveils a mutated Tomoyo as one of his soldiers. Tomoyo wounds Gendō and battles the monks until Kyoichi regains his senses and defeats her. With her final words, Tomoyo’s severed head reveals Miki’s grand ritual in Shinjuku to hijack Shiho’s power, prompting them to intervene. En route to Shinjuku, the group is ambushed by zombified citizens sent by Chiyoe. Gendō fights a mutated Mukuri in an uneven battle while the others assault the Shinjuku temple. After Ryora stays behind to destroy the mutant Tamaki, Gendō and Kyoichi confront Chiyoe, who has stolen Shiho’s soul. Kyoichi is defeated by Miki, who then reveals that Gendō actually died in the battle against Toshiro and had been a reanimated pawn of the Chiyoe family all along. Following this revelation, Gendō is confirmed dead. Kyoichi battles hopelessly against Miki until Shiho’s soul intervenes against Chiyoe. The temple is destroyed, resulting in the deaths of all involved.
