Description
Makoto Isshiki is a supporting character in the Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions! series, including the film Take On Me. He attends Icho Private High School and is a classmate and one of the first friends of the protagonist Yuuta Togashi. In his first year, he is placed in Class 1-4 and later moves to Class 2-3. He has tanned skin, short black hair, and blue eyes. After a notable incident in which he organizes a class-wide ranking of the girls by cuteness, the female students discover his poll and he voluntarily shaves his head as an apology, giving him a shaved look for much of the series.

Makoto’s outward personality is cheerful, sociable, and image-conscious. He is highly concerned with how others perceive him, especially girls, and frequently tries to impress them. This often leads to comedic failure. He is talkative and can appear overconfident, but he is not malicious; his actions stem from a genuine desire to be liked and to fit in. Beneath his confident exterior, he is easily flustered, particularly in romantic situations. Despite his tendency to act self-interested, he proves to be a loyal and supportive friend, especially to Yuuta. He is one of the few characters who does not engage in the chunibyo (eighth-grader syndrome) delusions, providing a grounded, realistic perspective within the group.

His primary motivation is a desire for popularity and romantic attention. Early on, his attempts to gain favor with girls are clumsy and backfire. Over time, his motivations shift toward genuine emotional connection. He develops sincere feelings for Kumin Tsuyuri, a sleepy, kind‑hearted member of the club. His crush on her marks a turning point where he begins to value sincerity over superficial approval.

In the story, Makoto acts as comic relief and a grounding presence. He is initially drawn into the chaos of the Far East Magical Napping Society (Summer Thereof) by sheer proximity to Yuuta and Rikka. He is eventually recruited as a member of the club and participates in its activities, though he never adopts a delusional persona. His role is to highlight the everyday high‑school life that contrasts with the more fantastical antics of the main characters. In the Take On Me film, he continues to appear as a supporting friend, involved in the group’s dynamics and providing humor.

Key relationships include his friendship with Yuuta, with whom he shares lunches, gossip, and frustrations about school and love. He also interacts with Shinka Nibutani and Sanae Dekomori, often serving as a target for their teasing. His relationship with Kumin Tsuyuri is the most significant for his personal growth: he harbors a quiet, earnest crush on her, and their awkward, sweet interactions contribute to his slow maturation.

Makoto’s development is subtle but present. He begins as a shallow, popularity‑driven teenager and gradually becomes more self‑aware and sincere. His shaving of his head after the poll incident is a defining moment of humility and accountability. He learns to apologize and to put others’ feelings ahead of his own image. His growing affection for Kumin pushes him toward honesty rather than performance.

He has no supernatural or special abilities; his notable trait is his earnest, if misguided, determination. He is also skilled at gathering information about his classmates, which he uses in his failed attempts at romance. His physical appearance after the head‑shaving becomes his most recognizable feature for the remainder of the series. Overall, Makoto Isshiki provides a relatable, comedic counterpoint to the chunibyo characters while undergoing a modest but meaningful arc of increased sincerity and emotional depth.
