Description
Tatsuuma Ushiyama, nicknamed "Ushiyama the Undefeated," originated from Mikawa province (present-day Aichi). He trained in judo for a decade without a single defeat. His life descended into violence after an affair with his master's wife. Upon discovery, the master assembled ten students to challenge Ushiyama, who killed his master and gravely wounded the students—one permanently bedridden with a crushed skull. This act resulted in his incarceration at Abashiri Prison.
Physically imposing at 188 cm and the series' heaviest character, Ushiyama boasts a muscular frame, cauliflower ears from judo, a pronounced brow ridge, and a distinctive square forehead bump. He typically dons a black three-piece suit, with the Abashiri convict tattoo spanning his torso and back.
His personality merges pragmatism, hedonism, and violence. He openly seeks sexual encounters, professing respect for the prostitutes he calls "Kannon bodhisattva." Deprived of regular intimacy, his volatility escalates. He savors arduous fights and honors formidable opponents, forging a bond with Sugimoto after their clash. Usually stern, he occasionally reveals sarcasm or dry humor.
Combat revolves around judo mastery and raw power. Daily, he kicks a 60 kg rice bag to sharpen sweeps capable of shattering ankles. His strength enables effortless throws of adults, blocking Kodiak bear strikes, and hurling the beast. His unusually thick skull deflects katana slashes, ranking him among Hokkaido’s deadliest fighters.
In the Escape King Arc, Hijikata recruits Ushiyama from an Otaru brothel. After a skirmish, Ushiyama joins Hijikata’s quest for Ainu gold. He aids the raid on Zenjirou Shibukawa’s hideout, observing Hijikata’s ruthlessness. Ushiyama questions Hijikata’s political ambitions for an independent Ezo, clarifying his sole interest is the gold.
During the Con Artists Arc, Ushiyama accompanies Ogata to Yubari, rescuing Sugimoto and Shiraishi from mine suffocation and later saving Ienaga from a burning building. Tasked with escorting Asirpa and Sugimoto to Tsukigata, he traverses forests, nervously sampling Ainu woodcock brains but enjoying ohaw stew. He interacts with Ainu villagers, requesting shelter and provisions.
Ushiyama’s arc culminates in a train conflict. He shields Asirpa from a grenade blast, sacrificing his left arm. Mortally wounded, he recalls Ienaga’s query about perfection, answering "Right now" as he protects Asirpa—redefining perfection through self-sacrifice. He dies moments later, Asirpa and Shiraishi acknowledging his strength and resolute, flawed nature.
