Shizuo Barato, nicknamed "Otome" ("Maiden"), sports a muscular build starkly at odds with his timid, conflict-averse demeanor. Habitually yielding to others’ demands, he avoids asserting himself, especially when facing domineering figures like his father or Power Masuda, the gym teacher. His inability to refuse requests stems from prioritizing others’ expectations over his own needs. Peers mockingly label him “Otome” for his traditionally feminine pastimes—baking intricate desserts, sewing costumes, and singing with delicate precision. He adopts the nickname passively, even when his enrollment in the boys’ choir begins as punishment for an impulsive stunt during a school event. Under conductor Haruo Hibiki’s mentorship, however, he discovers unexpected belonging, spurred by Haruo’s insistence that his voice anchors the group’s harmony. Clashes erupt when Masuda, citing Shizuo’s physique as “wasted” on choir, pressures him into weightlifting. Though initially capitulating, Shizuo defies expectations by refusing to abandon the choir—a first act of defiance signaling quiet transformation. Bonds with choirmates Kaito Kobashi and Haruo nurture his tentative confidence, shifting him from silent compliance to deliberate choice. His evolution culminates in a gradual embrace of self-determination, channeling resilience through steadfast dedication to his passions rather than overt rebellion.
