Description
Momotaro Tsurugi, also known as Momo, is the son of politician Jotaro Tsurugi. His father met Heihachi Edajima, principal of Otokojuku, while working at Japan's National Diet after World War II, which led to Momotaro's enrollment in the school—an institution known for turning delinquents into men through unorthodox and rigorous training.
Initially portrayed as a dropout from an elite high school, his tough character set him apart from peers and elders alike. He quickly rose to become the strongest first-year student and their natural leader, a position earned through action and resolve despite early clashes with classmates such as Genji Togashi.
He maintains a calm demeanor and a cool, analytical attitude, often serving as the voice of reason. Though not quick to anger, he intervenes decisively against injustice, punishing those he deems dishonorable. Beneath his stern exterior lies a kind heart and strong sense of justice, always ready to aid those in need. He shows deep respect for honorable opponents, often befriending them after battle, and has a noted soft spot for animals.
Standing 6'1" with a muscular build, he has short black hair and a traditionally handsome face, largely unscarred and clean-shaven. He typically wears a white hachimaki and the traditional Otokojuku uniform, though he often discards the top during intense fights, battling bare-chested. He always carries a katana with a red hilt.
A highly skilled martial artist and master swordsman, he is fluent in multiple languages. His techniques include the Seiken Kobushi Wari, crushing an opponent’s fist with his own; the Mugen Ittou-ryuu for sword combat; the Shinganken, an iai strike performed while blinded; the Shinkifuukon, concentrating his ki into a shockwave in the shape of a tiger; and the Koufuken Saikou, infusing his hachimaki with ki to wield it as a blade.
At Otokojuku, he led his classmates through numerous trials: overcoming cruel second-year students led by Gouji Akashi, defeating American exchange students like the boxer J, and surviving the school’s brutal “Specialties.” He played a central role in major conflicts including the Kyoura Daiyon Kyousatsu against the Kanto Gogakuren, the Dai Ishin Pa-Lien Seiha tournament against the third years, and the Tenchou Gorin Dai Bukai against the inhuman Hyoei Todo.
After graduating, he enrolled at the University of Tokyo, studied abroad at Harvard, and entered politics, eventually becoming Prime Minister of Japan. He is retired from this position in the sequel series. In later years, he adopts a formal suit but returns to his uniform and headband when called back into action, his body bearing scars from past battles.
In the sequel *Akatsuki!! Otokojuku*, set over a decade later, he is the father of Shishimaru Tsurugi, who attends a new generation of the school. He also makes cameo appearances in the spin-off *Sora Yori Takaku*, which follows two heavenly deities contesting their father’s throne.
A prequel reveals he trained at a temple to learn the Shoukyuu Soudan, a path later followed by his son. He greatly resembles his father, Jotaro, and his son has inherited his looks.
