Description
Hegeler served as second Governor-General of Gothamite forces on Earth, commanding under Leader Zytel during the invasion. A high-ranking Death Force officer, he initially demonstrated loyalty to Zytel's campaign to terraform Earth for Gothamite colonization. Hegeler participated in military operations against human resistance, including efforts to destroy the warship Blue Noah as it approached the orbiting Terror Star command station.
His loyalty shattered upon uncovering critical information about the true state of the Gothamite population aboard Terror Star. Internal investigations revealed nearly all 200 million Gothamite survivors had perished due to catastrophic life support system failures—a flaw deliberately concealed by Zytel. Hegeler further discovered Zytel's contingency plan: preserving digital backups of Gothamite consciousnesses within computer cells for transfer to Earth while abandoning the physical population. This revelation transformed Hegeler's view of the invasion's justification.
Confronting Zytel directly, Hegeler demanded an end to the occupation and advocated seeking an alternative habitable planet. When Zytel refused and attempted to suppress the truth, a physical altercation ensued. Hegeler fatally stabbed Zytel. Assuming temporary command, Hegeler attempted to redirect Terror Star away from Earth using Jupiter's gravitational slingshot. However, critical engine failures caused by system degradation placed the satellite on a collision course with Earth.
In the final crisis, Hegeler ordered emergency engine reactivation despite imminent risk of catastrophic explosion. This last-minute maneuver averted planetary impact and realigned Earth's axis, but caused Terror Star's propulsion systems to catastrophically overheat. The vessel subsequently drifted into the Sun and was destroyed, eliminating the remaining Gothamite presence. Before the satellite's destruction, Hegeler transmitted a final warning to Blue Noah's commander, urging humanity to avoid repeating the Gothamites' mistake of submitting to authoritarian leadership driven by self-preservation over ethical responsibility.
